I have two varieties of verbena, a red trailing verbena and a purple verbena, neither of which are doing well at all. I have some in full sun and some in part sun, and even with dead heading they don't seem to be thriving or even blooming anymore. The red trailing verbena is in a hanging basket and isn't blooming at all right now (on the left side of the pot in the picture). Some of the leaves are yellowing as well. I water every day. Am I doing something wrong or do their blooms come in waves? Any help would be great. Thanks!!
Verbena help!!
Could be overwatering--if it was healthy looking and not blooming then I'd think it was just taking a break between waves of blooms but since you've got leaves turning yellow that makes me suspect there's something else going on. That's a pretty big, deep pot and I'm guessing your temps aren't super hot yet, so I doubt it needs to be watered every day. Before the next time you water, test to see if it really needs it. If you can easily reach up into the pot, stick your finger down a few inches and see how wet the soil feels--if it's really wet still a few inches down then you should back off on watering. If you can't reach easily, try lifting the pot from the bottom just to see how heavy it is. If it needs water, it should feel fairly light, but if it's still really wet then it'll feel heavy. You might also need to drill some more drainage holes in the bottom--it's hard to see from the picture what the drainage situation is, but if there are just a few tiny holes then it won't drain well and when you combine that with watering more often than it probably needs then you can run into trouble.
I have to agree with ecrane3. Looks like a classic case of over watering. People see a plant that looks like it is wilting and automatically water it when in fact the wilting is caused by too much water. I noticed that the companion plant in your pot is Bacopa and it seems to be doing OK . Bacopa thrives in moist conditions and high humidity. Verbena and Bacopa while planted together look great they are not ideal partners, not to say they cannot exist together. Verbena enjoys a much dryer soil condition. Trying to balance moisture in a container with 2 plants whose requirements are dissimilar can be a challenge. Growers have the knowledge and expertise to walk this fine line, but growers who sell these products to people should make them aware of these facts. When I stop by garden centers thrown up by mass marketers like Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowes ect. ect. and see some of the combinations they have put into hangers and containers it is almost laughable.
Thank you for all the advice, I will definitely check the wetness as I have been watering when they look wilted....oops! The bacopa is doing well (thank you for noticing!), so I might move the verbena somewhere else and hope it recovers. What would you recommend to plant with the bacopa in pink, white or red?? I would like to have something a little more upright since the bacopa is doing well as a trailing plant. Again thanks!!
There are numerous flowering annuals you can use. In my opinion the Supertunias and Surfinia petunias are probably the easiest to care for. They can co-exist with the Bacopa, they do well in a hanger, they do not require deadheading, they are not plagued by diseases, bloom heavily all season and come in many colors. A couple of 4 inch or a good heavy 6 inch pot would be adequate for the hanger pictured. If you Google the two I have mentioned you will be able to see the colors offered. Calibrachoa is another option. The flowers are smaller than the petunias but have a similar shape but not as many color choices and they can develop problems if over watered.
Thanks for the suggestion cyclops, I will go buy some (I think either would be great) tomorrow and try them out!!!!
