flower pot cleaning solution

Anoka, MN

Does anyone know what I am supposed to clean my flower pots with after I have removed the plants and dirt? I thought I had read somewhere that you make a solution of bleach and water but I can't remember what ratio I am supposed to use. Or maybe someone out there uses a different cleaning solution?

I always make a container of water and put some bleach in. I don't know of any ratio. Just say 1/4 cup to 2 gallons water. Rinse well and you should have no problems. I also scrub my puts outside with ajax and rinse off with the hose. All of that works fine. Rinsing is the key. Good Luck!!!!!

Wash the outsides of the pot with mix of 2 tablespoons of liquid dish soap and 1 tablespoon of liquid bleach in a gallon of warm water. Use an old toothbrush or hand brush and scrub them clean Rinse and let air dry

If you are afraid of viruses, a solution of 20% bleach will even kill the parvovirus that animals get and cleanse the area where they were, 1 part bleach to 5 parts water should do. Soap and water for dirt and grease, apple cider vinegar will cut the soap and leave it squeaky clean. DO NOT MIX CHLORINE AND ACIDS( lemon juice, vinegar, ammonia, etc) as it causes a lethal chlorine gas. Literally. but as far as that goes, soap doesn't hurt most plants if it is a lo sudsing soap used sparingly...

This may sound like a dumb question, BUT what do you do with the used soil?

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I usually just toss it in the garden (assuming the plants that were in it didn't die from a disease...if there was disease involved then I throw it out)

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

you can also spread it in full sun to bake for a yr, but, some things remain in the soil no matter what, throwing away I guess, sends it to the dump, but don't re use
