Happy 4th of July, too! I sure hope those who have to travel have a safe journey. We'll be going to pick our older son at the airport later today. Maybe by then the much needed rain we have had yesterday and today quits long enough for us to get there and back. He's come to visit us for a few days.
Veronica
Be careful, Betty. Watch out for traffic. It will be bad this weekend.
Charleen
Slyguy
that looks like the roots have been disturbed, do you have a lot of Squirrels
Elizabeth
Oh, Elizabeth, I love both of the blooms. The brug is beautiful and the Plumeria, does it smell sweet??
the Skirts are coming down on Adora again, maybe they will make it this time. I'm hoping. As soon as they drop I'll get you a picture. See little buds on some of the others.
Moved my bog into my new flower bed (one of them) closer to water, we did get a sprinkle today. i didn't have to water tonight, probably will tomarrow. have to wait and see.
Charleen
Charlene
I am glad you like them, they were taking with my new camera, I can't wait too see Adora Bloom, I will keep my fingers crossed for you, the plumeria has a great smell, it's hard too describe, I have more Buds coming on, so there will be a lot of Pic's, it seems like they are later this year, usually the end of June they are loaded with Blooms & Buds
I waited 2 yrs to get the Plumeria's it was woth the wait, that's the small one the Bigger one just has leaves, no Bloom yet
I am so glad you got a sprinkler, that always helps, no dragging the water hose, it rained yesterday, last night & this morning, naturally after I already watered
Elizabeth
That is a beautiful bloom there Elizabeth, what is its name? I went to visit Tropicman in town the other day and got to smell his blooming plummie trees, his stuff is like 10 to 15 ft tall, I do not know how he does it all by himself.
His brugs are all tree size and blooming.
Charleen, how is maya?
I have a couple more brugs getting buds, betty marshall, jean pasko, cassies curls and Isabella out front are now budding, and can you believe Kaitlyn and Isabella 1 are both rebudding again even tho they still have their second blooms still on? Sheesh!
It's in a pot, PL49. I've only had it a bit and haven't potted or sunk in the ground. Truthfully I couldn't decide.
I have alot in Pots sylguy, and sometimes I come home to them being wilted in the heat. try moving it to some shade.
It gets morning sun adn is screened from most afternoon direct sun by trees, but I'll move it back further and It won't get any. It was fine "till all our rain. Thx
well it needs a little sun! LOL.. don't worry, they are tuff little plants. Mine always bounce back even when totally collapsed from the sun. That is how a plant protects itself I learned in here at DG. ( I had no clue)
I meant it won't get any afternoon sun, it'll get all morning. I just didn't say it clearly. THX, I have learned worlds from these threads.
Just this morning I treated my self to a moisture meter from Lowes. $5.95, and has 9" prongs to measure moisture, light and Ph. Best of all, no batteries.. Works like a charm. I checked a rainsoaked pot, one under eaves that got splatter, and a houseplant that I knew needed watering. You set it to what you're testing for and I've only tried for moisture.
Isn't it wonderful??/ It is like they got backup blooms. Adora is doing that but I'm going to hold back on pic. til it's fully dropped.
Slyguy, I will be glad when you figure it out, I have one of those moisture meter's they are good, as you said no batteries
Debra
just beautiful, my Isabella didn't make up, but my Adeline is growing strong, no Buds yet though, the Plumeria's name is
Penong Peach
Charlene
Good morning, I am hoping your Bloom will be fully Bloomed out soon
I think it will, Elizabeth, I believe we got another sprinkle thru the night, just slept thru it,,☺ DH says I "Crash" I do that sometime.
Old age catches up with me. I'll get pic. It's sure looking promising.
Charlene
can't wait too see it, I bet it will be beautiful, in this heat my Rosalla is losing Buds, I might have too water more often.
when I go to sleep you could set of a bomb & I wouldn't hear it
Elizabeth
He said it Thundered too but I didn't hear it. It is raining now, I love it. Needed it so bad.
Debra I got two Mayas and they are both growing. One looks like it has been hit with a scatter gun. got another brug not 5 feet away and no holes. Maya is a tasty delight. They should start growing now. i hope. Can You overwater them when they ARE growng??? I am afraid I ewill over fertilize them too. I think I am a worrier.
i love the moisture probes I have one I use in the houseplants.
I just took care of my cutting I got from the Eddie co-op and then the rain set in. IT has been cloudy for days now but not all that much rain. You just can't complain about too much rain in July in Texas. We hit 100 in May and now all this week, low 90s or upper 80s, I'll take it and so do the Brugs. I don't care how much you water your Brugs when it's 100 they just shut down. For years I have seen friends in MI, MA and NY get blooms before we do and they don't understand why. Yes we have a longer growing season but our plants shut down for three months in the extreme heat. Then they start growing during the Fall cool down, just before the first frost. I remember one year cutting all of our Brugs to the ground and as we were cutting off the tinder parts, we were stepping on buds by the hundreds, pop, pop, pop.
Hey Brug friends, I came in pooped from the garden to watch Central Texas Gardener on TV this morning. A guest was an author, Amy Stewart, of a book called Wicked Plants. Like all alerts for poisonous plants, I considered dogs and children in the past for things that could be ingested. Now it's just us 2.
She said she always handles Brugs with gloves because if you touch them and then your eyes, it can cause serious damage. Her friend thought she'd had a stroke, and when they looked at one of her eyes, her pupil was blown (all the way open).
This book is mostly about people, like what plant killed Lincolns mother, etc. But she's researched her plant back stories. The station is Austin's KGSR and has a website and one can go to CTG for further info on the shows.
Hi slyguy,
I watched the same show which is on at 4:00 PM as well. Every one gets different information when listening to an "expert" depending on how it is presented. I wondered if she was trying for sensationalism when she wrote the book. She did mention, when she brought up the subject of sensitivity to poison ivy, that some people are more sensitive than others. It makes sense to take precautions if you are very sensitive to the chemical content of a certain plant or if you have very young children. Older children can be taught which plants to stay away from. What was her friend doing putting dirty fingers in her eyes? LOL. On the other hand, what sells a book can also unnecessarily discourage people from enjoying some wonderful plants.
I think the use of gloves is a good idea if you are going to be handling lots of cuttings where the sap can come off on your hands. It all depends on what you are doing with your rugs. In Brugs, some of the toxins are volatile and in an enclosed environment, such as a closed or small greenhouse, can cause some eye discomfort — nothing major. I've experienced that discomfort at least once this past winter while removing leaves from spidermite infected Brugs, but I've been able to re-pot many Brugs, take some cuttings, deadhead flowers, etc, without feeling any ill effects.

The station is KLRU. The other one is a radio station. :-)
You're right, I had the station wrong. I don't think she was trying for sensationalism as she just said it in passing. It is easy, however, to forget and touch your face. My mom wore gloves to garden, and was mildly sensitive to poison ivy (the author did say that it is neither poison or ivy, just causes allergic reactions in some people), and at least once a season mom'd brush her face or neck and get a little bloom.
Slyguy
I have had Brugs for 9yrs now, I have too take them in in the winter, I also have a 9yr old GD, that I have raised for the same number of years, I also wash my hands after handling the clippings & the leaves when I take them off, they are many
plants that are harmful if injested the leaves of Rhubarb, also potatoes that have turned green, it's always best to take caution when growing plants, oh devils ivy is also another one considered a bad plant, I also grow that, my Children have been raised with my plants, the oldest one is 37yrs old
Elizabeth
I love your Jessie Noel. I'm hoping JT will have it for sale again. I lost mine a few years ago.
Veronica
I will have cuttings this fall for you if you want them, just let me know, it is a pretty little Bloom isn't it, I have lots of small Buds, I had too water today, the forecast doesn't call for rain for the next 5 days, so I will be watering every day, I want lots of blooms, I hope yours are doing great
Elizabeth
What a great idea...placing the potted plant onto an opened bag of top or potting soil!

Beautiful blooms Elizabeth! Love the colors on your plumeria blooms.Charleen, that is a great idea..especially for us northerners that have to bring them in....just root prune around the pot, lift it and bring it in for the winter.
Dee
Charleen, what brugs did you get from George?
Dee
Dola, Strawberries and Cream. I'll have to look in morning, can't remember about a half a dozen. Adora (Adorn), Super Nova, got to look.
Can't remember I have Painted Lady with buds, My Adora is dropping skirts. So Exciting. Will punch holes so soil won't turn sour. But it is quicker than digging a hole and you don't have to worry about grass for a while either.
