Plants in Planters advice

San Diego, CA

A narrow (16") strip across the front of our house front has gravel and 6 'stepping' stones acting as Planter 'saucers' as we can't plant directly into soil there.
Any advice would be very much appreciated on what shape of planters to use and what plants would grow in them which receive no sun in the winter and full West sun during Summer afternoons. We can't seem to get anything to grow there. Last resort . . . pink, plastic flamingos?
Our home decor is mainly Southwest with a gravel front yard.
Thank you for any help you can offer!

Why would that area get no sun in the winter but full sun in the summer?
I like using a combo of large and small containers, different shapes and sizes, but like sticking with a color theme.
This is a shot in Epcot in April, but see how they used all the different sized containers?
You can also do a fountain and surround it with planters

Thank you for the idea, flowerjen. I'll look up Epcot to see if it can handle hot western afternoon sun and no sun in the winter months. Our garage shadow cuts out the sun in the winter and morning sun in the summer. Your flower pot arrangement is very pretty . . . which gives me the idea to change plant pots from shade loving to sun tolerant depending on the season. Thank you again for the help!

Some kind of ornamental grass might be nice. Even dormant it is pretty.

I would do mums. They come back each year, & mutilply. Just cut them down in the spring.
