Need guidance filling both!
Newish home, no lanscaping, high desert climate (junipers and sage brush) with rocky/sandy/volcanic soil and tons o' sun- I don't even have a lawn yet.
Three issues: I don't want to try to recreate a rain forest for out-of-their-element plants, I would like to go as organic as possible (permaculture education and guidance would be AWESOME), and last night, deer (I'm assuming, could've been jack rabbits...) ate the heads off the few flowers I currently have outside, and that didn't work so well for me. I believe I want to plant flowers that won't be beheaded during the night.
Help? Words of Wisdom? Plant Ideas?
Yard is a blank slate and my mind an empty cup.
You live in a city named Weed? Oh goodness.... Sorry, couldn't resist. The first thing I was advised to do when I was in your position was to find out the native plants for my area and pay attention to how much sun each section of my yard got and whether it was morning or afternoon sun. Xeriscaping plants would obviously be appropriate for you, but I'm sure you know that. Maybe you could post a picture? There's so much good advice given on here but most people like to see a picture, especially for something like this. I'm pretty new at all this but learning as much as possible is half the fun!! Good luck on your adventure.
Your best bet would be to section off the yard. Only work one section at a time. Add black plastic, & cover with good dirt, or pea gravel. Add pots with plants so that the deer cannot nibble(remove at night). Plant your grass in sections. Its easier to care for. Add ornamental grasses. These grow fast, & easy to grow.
Here's a nice website that talks about California's plant communities and the types of plants that naturally grow there. According to them, the plant community in Weed is red fir forest. Here's a description, and if you scroll to the bottom of the page there's a link to the plants that naturally grow in that type of plant community. http://www.laspilitas.com/nature-of-california/communities/red-fir-forest They also sell some of the plants mail order, but even if you don't want to buy from them you can get some lists of names of plants to take with you to your local nursery.
