what causes the segments of christmas cactus to suddenly start falling off.

Mine have fallen off when i've watered them too much. A little water once a week seems to be to their liking.

Some plants are very sensitive to 'climate' changes. Sudden temperature changes, strong cold/hot drafts, movement to a different location, sudden water changes, too much fertilizer etc. can all affect a plant. My christmas cactus always loses a lot of leaves right after it flowers. Have you done anything different with it and what type of conditions is it growing in?

I always put my Christmas Cactus outside in the summer where they got morning sun and more water. They seemed to really thrive out there. When I brought them inside in the fall, they already had flower buds on them. Mine always bloomed at Thanksgiving. Probably because they were getting the right amount of darkness outside, which starts the bloom cycle. Once inside, I didn't water them very much, maybe once a week. Too much water inside the house they start to rot or the leaves fall off. After they bloomed I brought them upstairs where they rested for the winter. That's when I really cut back the water (out of sight, out of mind). There was always some shriveled leaves during that time, but they came back strong over the summer in the fresh air and more frequent watering.

pastime, I do mine like you do. Tho mine are in dappled shade all summer.

I think they really appreciate being outside in the summer. Because mine got a little morning sun, the leaves took on a red ting. They were shaded by my Burning Bush in the afternoon, so the leaves never got fried.

I learned here at DG last year that CC can live for generations. Gave me a new respect for them.
