Sunflower?

Bridgetown, Barbados

Is this the beginning of a beautiful sunflower - or do I have to wait a little while longer?

Could be hard to tell what it is from the view.

Will try to take some better pictures over the weekend.

I think it is kinda amazing how the "heads" follow the sun during the course of the day. When I wake up on a morning they are facing the right and when I come come on an evening from work they are facing the left!!

These are definately sunflower heads!! I took some more pictures today and you can actually see the yellow petals peeping through (if you look REALLY close).

Somehow I imagined them to be much larger - will wait and see what happens next......

It is just getting started. Some sunflowers are really large but some are small. All according to what you planted. The volunteers I get from feeding the birds the black oil sunflower are very small.

Check out my half opened sunflower....I think by tomorrow it will be fully open...definately not as large as I thought it would have been!

I just thought I would share my blooming sunflowers with you guys.

So what happens next? I read that they (the flower) will last for about 3 weeks and then they dry up. My question is does the entire plant dry up aka die or will the stalk bloom another flower in a few months time?

No more flowers.

Nope, I don't think they make any more. At least the black oil sunflowers that the squirrels plant here don't, lol. We have quite a few right now, too!

That is kinda sad - no more flowers. I guess as soon as they start to wither away I am going to chop it down, dispose of the flower head properly and uproot the plant or else I am going to have LOADS of sunflower plants all over the place!!

Leave the flowers on the stalk until they dry and then harvest your seed. Good for planting next year and you can feed the birds the surplus this winter. You might even want to try a few yourself.

Unless the squirrels get them first. haha

Ooo, what's the name of the dwarf ones, do you know?

Bridgetown, Barbados

The dwarf ones are cute!! I would love to get me some of those.

Actually Jim41 I am looking forward to when the sunflower dries up so I can try some homemade, homegrown sunflower seeds :) We do not have winter here - it is either sunny or rainy so I can grow sunflowers all year round!!

Hi Ya Jim, am I making good time or what? LOL

Ky sorry, looked for the tag but must have thrown it out, thinking they won't come back next year anyway. May try to get some seeds.

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

That's okay, thanks for looking! Now that I know they exist, I'll keep my eye out for them. That would be great if they come back for you next year.
