Cordyline troubles. Rolled up, dry, dying leaves, bugs...

Pueblo, CO

I bought a Cordyline terminalis plant on clearance at Lowe's. It wasn't in the best of shape when I got it and had a lot of dead yellow leaves on it. I trimmed the dead leaves off, repotted it, and fed it with some miracle-gro plant food. I saw some sort of dead worms when I repotted it. I also noticed a few bugs flying around, so I got some pesticide and have used it as directed. Unfortunately, it still just doesn't seem happy. More leaves have died, many are rolled up, and I don't know what else to do. I water it when the soil feels dry. One time I watered it and after a few hours, there was still water in the tray, so I dumped it out. I live in Colorado where it's semi-arid so I have been spraying it with water about once a day (sometimes more, sometimes I forget). I love this plant, but I don't know how to make it healthy. I'm also concerned with it getting "stringy" because of all the leaves that are dying. I don't know how or if I should prune it? What am I doing wrong? I read something about fluoride being a problem, so should I start watering it with distilled water or something? I can post a picture if that would help.

It likes bright light (not direct) Does better with warmer temps. and more humidity. It will get brown tips with fluoride in the water. When you repotted it ,did you look at the roots to make sure no root rot? I have a red one and it liked to be watered and kept moist but you have to balance it and not let it set in water. Hates to be dried out. (at least the one I had) Mine would get full brown leaves cause I wasn't watering it enough.
