plant right after weeding?

Berkeley, CA

My garden has about 10 years' growth of bermuda and crab grass. I'm pulling it up one section at a time, digging up as many of the runners as I can. My question is, should I put in other plants right after I clear a section or wait until some of the grasses reemerge so I can pull them up again? I've found in the past that new growth will emerge from old runners that I didn't know were buried under the soil--thus, allowing new growth seems a good way to identify and pull up existing, old runners. On the other hand, I've read that establishing new plants will help prevent weed growth. I'd appreciate any comments or advice! Thanks!

If you wait until no weeds come back you will never plant anything!
Plant now and pull weeds as they come up. The plants and the mulch will help discourage weeds but some will always come back.
It's just an ongoing process.

I made my garden right in the middle of the back yard lawn. We just tilled up a big section, and raked up as many of the grass pieces as possible. It was a lot of work! I planted in it right away, and of course there were many grass sprouts that appeared, along with weeds. That was 3 years ago, and I'm still fighting weeds and grass trying to sprout in the garden. If I had it to do all over again, I would have tilled and then placed cardboard over the soil, soaked it with the garden hose, then covered it with pine straw. Leaving it like that all summer, fall and winter would have killed all the weeds and grass, and the garden would have been ripe for planting the following spring.

And then ten thousand birds would have pooped out ten thousand seeds and you'd still have weeds :)

newto's law say it would happen that way

If you saw the weed problem I have, you'd know what I mean. It's a lot easier to stay on top of a few weeds that sprout from bird poop than it is to have to tackle grass roots, as well. But we can all do whatever works for us individually, and learn from our mistakes and successes in the process, right?

I have a huge problem with weeds as well, especially foxtails. I have been doing a section at a time of clearing the weeds. I found out about Preen from my neighbor and my grandfather also uses it. I have just tried it and will see how it turns out. Won't harm plants, just prevents them from growing from seed......

That's an excellent point! Thanks for the reality check. I just worry about disturbing any plants I put in since I will probably have to continually dig up more stolons.

Ret_Sgt_Yates--thanks for the laughs! I'm impressed by your industriousness.
