It was so hot and muggy here today, I wasn't sure if it was a good idea to leave them on the ground, or put them on the table or what! Such a better harvest than last year's onions!

one can always leave them in the ground and in the evening when the sun crest (gos down) water the garden however, dont let your harvest go to waste hun . keep them out of the sun and in the shade and in a cool spot for drying the soil the site will help with the rest .

I'd clip the tops and leave only about an inch. Then stick the top down through something like wire and put them in a dry place where you get a little air circulation and forget them. I have one of those flat garden trailers with the expanded metal top that I used to dry my onions on. Once they are good and dry put them in an old pair of panty hose and hang them from a rafter somewhere out of the way.

So they need to go back outside to dry on something that allows the air to circulate around them?

yes

Dry them for a couple of days, then bring 'em in and cook them. Mine lasted about a month. Ate the last one last night.

This is only part of them. The rest I haven't picked yet. LOL

I have an old wooden table on my porch on which I have placed an old blanket. After I pull the onions, I lay them in a single pile on the blanket and let them dry. Then I cut-off the tops and keep them there. If there are still some left when winter arrives, I cut them up and freeze them.

Stef, Leave the rest of the onions in the ground. They will stay there until you need them. Even throughout the winter.

I pulled the rest of them this morning and they're laying on top of an old wooden pallet with some cross boards over it. The onions are on top, of course! We're expecting triple digits this weekend, so the DH is going to clear a spot for them under the carport in the back. That way they'll get circulation and heat, but not the hot, hot sun.

stephanie - that sounds like a good plan. Although I have read that onions should be left in the sun to dry, I am concerned that some bug (or the dog) will come along and damage them, so I prefer to keep them where I can keep an eye on them. The table is right outside the kitchen door, so I can hop outside, choose the onion I want, and have it with dinner.

Thankfully, we don't have to worry about dogs and I can see the carport out my kitchen window. They will get a bit of direct sun, so they should be okay.
