I planted 5 rows of corn, I did exactly as the directions said even went as far as measured how deep to plant with a ruler. But now that the patch has sprouted and the stalks are about 4 in tall I see about a third to maybe half didn,t sprout . I really feel like I failed at this so can any one tell me what the problem may have been .
Why didnt my corn sprout?
At the time of planting and for the days after planting what were your weather conditions? What kind of sweet corn was it? You will never get 100% germination with any seed but with fresh corn seed you should expect a much better rate than you stated.
the seed is called Ambrosia sweet corn and it was packaged for 2010 ,We have had a lot of rain not good long soaking rains , but quick hard down pours with quick flooding I notice I have peas and carrots growing in places they were not planted in my garden. It was BK seed that I planted and I dont know if there is a better seed to plant , how do you know if it is fresh corn seed I bought it at rural king farm store.
thats what happened to mine the first section i planted . i did not worry i kept going even with the lil cut worms that kept cutten my okra seedling down so i made my bug be gone stuff it made the plants grow and killed the lil buggers lol done two jobs in one its posted if you need it i'll post it again but you should beable to find it .just dont give up the good lord will bless you for you efforts trust me . he has blessed me for mine many times over. you can read my blog and see that it may be funny but it's all true. i promise .
that seems like it's fresh as it could be so that is not a problem looks like the heavy rain it the thing . but we just can not do much about that can we . like i said dont give up . and keep your head up and keep going it will pay off for you . and God will Bless you for your hard work too. good lock and as always I amhere if you want or need to chat .

The Garden Made Possable By Gods Grace!
Sarg, I read your blog you have had your trials this spring with rain ,I seen on the news that parts of TN were badly flooded I hope you and your family were not affected. I thank you for the encouraging words I will replant this weekend the rest of the corn and be happy with what ever I get. You reminded me that we sow but God gives the harvest.
No Ms Tammy I Did not Get hit with the floods I am south of Nashville and North of Chatanooga right in the Middle Of Gods Country If you will LOL I am in the Saddle so to speak of your right it realy dont matter what you plant but you do have to work the ground and tend it or the weeds wil take it back its by the Grace of God and the Blessings he Gives that makes it worth the effort. I could have gave up long ago but then I would not have found this site or the folks on here either and thats worth a lot too you dont get to meet them face to face but youdo get to talk to them and share your experances and triumps so it helps them too .
you never know who you might help over that next hump!
Ambrosia is a sugar enhanced bi-color. If you had wet cold conditions at the time of planting some of the seed could have rotted. If you have a clay loam soil it takes longer for this type of soil to warm up than sandy looser soils. The ideal soil temp for SE corn is 62 degrees or more. We are not talking about air temp. Some corn seed comes treated with a fungicide to help prevent rotting under adverse conditions. Bottom line is if you had cold wet soil at the time of planting this could be the problem with poor germination. If your seed packet stated it was packaged for 2010 it would have been fresh seed. Another problem you may encounter is with pollination. If there are wide spaces between plants they may not pollinate very well. Corn is pollinated by wind and much of the pollen could just fall causing unpollinated ears. It is not too late to replant if you feel the need to do so as soil temps are probably ideal now. I live in zone 6b and I have not planted my corn yet but will do so this weekend. Good luck
