Can Sparaxis bulbs grow through decomposed granite?

Long Beach, CA

I am getting ready to replant my parkway. I have laid a weed barrier and purchased some Sparaxis Tricolor (Harlequin Flower) bulbs, among other things. The plan is to cut holes in the barrier, plant and then mulch with about 3" of decomposed granite. My question is: will the bulbs grow up through the dg or should I leave "holes" (in the dg) until the plants start growing?

Yes, bulbs will come up through gravel.

It depends on how large of a hole you cut in the weed barrier. Sparaxis bulbs are relatively small, but they do multiply quickly here. If you only make the hole in the weed barrier the size of ONE bulb it will be difficult for the new ones to come up through it as they multiply.

There's a lot of controversy about using weed barriers. Some people love it, others hate it. While it is effective in keeping weeds from growing UP through it, weed seeds that find their way into the dg can sprout and the roots will grow DOWN through the weed barrier...then when you go to pull the weeds you end up lifting the weed barrier and it can be a real mess.

Using a granular pre-emergent weed killer is a lot easier and less hassle.

I have the same problem
