Wisteria

Springfield, OH

I got 2 big Wisteria vines at home Depot last week, and a garden friend came over and seen them and told me to move them (one in back yard on it's on trellis) and (one on front poarch awning in flower bed) She said they not only grow up and vine they spread out also, and will take over everything. She said they need a place to them selves or I will loose my flower bed in the front. I read up on them before I bought and I know they take some time to get really big and alot of pruning, But I never heard of it sperading out. Can any offer any help on this??

How much it takes over is a direct reflection of your commitment to the plant. I don't mean to come across as harsh, but it's as simple as that. It "can" take over if "you" let it. You can also strive to keep it in check. It's not like it's kudzu and you're living in the deep south. If that was the case I'd say forget it. But you're in a more temperate climate and growth won't be as rabid as warmer climes. I say go for it! Although I will say I mostly see Wisteria climbing in tall trees, like Oaks, or formed into a "bush" of it's own making. One ancient one comes to mind that I saw in the past. the home was every bit of 80 years old and it had a Wisteria formed into a bush that any hookah-smoking caterpillar would be proud to sit upon. The owner, not the original, told me there was a steel pole in the center of the "trunk" that apparently was the original support for the vine. The entire pole was wrapped in vines and unseen. At about 6foot the "canopy" branched out to form the "mushroom cap". It was probably 8 foot in diameter. It was a very unique piece. You could see small vines running through the grass and I assume he just mowed them with the rest of the lawn.
Unfortunately when I saw it it was past bloom. The current owner said it was beautiful when it was though, and I believe him.

Good Luck! Whatever you decide to do!

if you prune it back each early sping it will bloom better and it wont take over. you can also prune back to what you want it to do. you just have to keep it in control. i have one in my iris bed i keep trimmed back and it does just fine. you just gotta stay with it.

Thanks To all!! After I posted I learned through DG that I bought the "stinkey" Wisteria Amethyst Falls. The one in the back yard on it own trellis had a small bloom on it so I picked it and sure enough " IT STINKS" . The one on the front poarch has to be moved no question about that. I do not want to smell it next year. I think I can leave the one in the back though. We shall see!

The good news is that Amethyst Falls is an American wisteria, so you won't have to worry about spreading, growing aggressively, etc. The American wisterias may not smell as nice, but they sure are better behaved in the garden than the Chinese/Japanese wisterias (which are undoubtedly the ones your friend was warning you about)

Thanks that is good to know!! Still have to move at least one of them. And it was already getting new growth. so sad. I really want one on the front but I guess I will plant a climbing Rose there instead, At least I know what they smell like LOL
