DAILY PICS VOL. 325

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Here's a fresh new thread to share your favorite daily bird photos. We came from here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1101605/

I'll start with this Black-bellied Whistling Duck. Ducks in trees always look so funny to me.

It looks like these baby herons are squawking up a storm but actually they were panting. It was 8:30 in the morning and already oven hot. Afternoon temps were over 100 degrees. Summer is here!

The white one in the front is a Little Blue Heron and the big brown ones are Yellow-crowned Night Herons.

The question on this one is about that extra wing. See the Little Blue Heron in front -- that must be his wing hanging down behind him right? Weird angle. Herons are just weird with their backward knees and well look at the Yellow-crowned with his wings open -- weird looking right?!

And a mockingbird. I like take-off shots!

Excellent shots Elphaba!! Love those young ones, yes weird but so cool!

Thanks for starting the new thread!

Elphaba, what a great start. I just love the duck. The herons certainly do look hot. Good shots.

North Little Rock, AR(Zone 7b)

Elphaba, great duck picture! Of course, I am partial to ducks ;o)) Cute babies!

Mount Pleasant Mills, PA(Zone 5a)

Love the Herons. Baby is soooooooooo cute.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Thank you Elphaba for a great start to a new thread. I favored the Black Billed Whistling duck. I can see how Kim loves them so! It's so cool to see different Herons babes gathering together at one place. A type of sighting that I've been looking for all along, and you've found it. Love, love it.

My little jewel. I was being buzzed. Hummingbirds are here to stay.

LOL Duckmother! . . . and thanks all.

Lily_love, I sure miss the hummingbirds. Hope your little friend will come see me this fall, but it's nice to enjoy your pics while I wait.

Columbus, GA(Zone 8a)

Elphaba - great start to the fresh thread, AND I love that pic of the Black-bellied Whistling Duck, what a nice looking duck.

Lily_love - nice hummer, I ain't seen one yet.

Here's six pics from yesterday, between the rain showers.

This is a Robin. I've been reading up on Robins, trying to see the difference in males and females. By the dark head, I think this is a male.

Anyone know anything about sexing Robins?

By the look of the yellow beak, this is an adult female Cardinal.

By the color of the black beak, this is a juvie Cardinal, I'd guess female.

Snapped me a pic of a male Downy Woodpecker. I see 'em fairly regular - Downy's, both sexes.

I spied this female House Finch resting on a limb.

And for my last one, for now, a Mockingbird that was perched on the power line going up to my yard light (kinda like a street light, but in my yard). This one had more of a brown hue to it. Most of the ones I see are grayish black.

Lily, your wp baby is just the cutest little thing! Congratulations! It looks so scared and helpless in that second picture. Lily, I must have read your heron's name wrong because I thought that's what you'd typed! Oh well, I knew what you meant! LOL

Nanny, your little starling is another cutie!

Hack, your composite is wonderful. The babies are so cute. Love the pose on the nuthatch-sure is a pretty bird. The cardinal baby is another sweet looking bird. Great picture of the robin-bet they were happy with the rain bringing out the worms. Cute one of the female House Finch too!

Burn, so sorry about the lost baby. What a sad thing to find for you. The live baby looks so sad. Beautiful shot of your waxwing. Love that warbler and the gull. Congrats on the kingbird.

Elphaba, great job on your Ibis and thanks for the new thread. Loved the first Whistling Duck. The heron babies are adorable.

This Brown-headed Cowbird was fluffing up and getting prepared to jump into the birdbath below him.

Our Northern Flickers haven't been seen here for a few weeks, but I found this one at the park.

Also at the park we found this hawk flying off the nest to chase after a crow that got too close.

Thumbnail by ducbucln
Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

The nest was too high up in a tree, but I did see two heads looking down at me. You can see one baby here.

I took this picture of a Hooded Oriole while he was sitting on our deck railing.

This pair of California Quail were all puffed up during the rain a couple days ago.

Duc, the Cowbird all fluffing up before it dives in into the bath is so cute. I love other shots as well. How awesome you get to see Hawk's nest with babies!

Elphaba, I meant to mention that the White Ibis with it reflection is wonderful (from last thread). What's 'saturation' technique have you learned from Marna? Care to pass it on. I know I'm not using my Pannasonix Lumix to its best capacity.

Sorry Hack and Elphaba about not seeing your hummingbirds this time of year. They don't hang out in your locales during the summer? This is my first year watching them closely, I've much to learn still.

I'm so happy to find -- what appeared to be some types of swallow fledglings? Mom or Papa was busy catching bugs down the lawn and flew back up here to feed these adorable chicks.

Stretching out their wings, and calling/chirpping all the while for their parents to come back with more 'goodies'. lol

This is a delightful sight (for me). But I bet you the owner of the property ain't so pleased to have to clearn up after these visitors. Canadian Geese and their many goslings. Ahhh those babes are getting to be about in their 'teen years' I gathered. ^_^

It's slightly over cast thus this pix didn't come out as well as I thought. An Eastern Kingbird arrives at my Hummingbird feeding station in the backyard. I was delighted that I was but a few yards away. I saw it first!!!

...then it saw me! "Whatcha lookin' at?"

Thumbnail by Lily_love

Did I mention it's slightly over cast? My sweet Carolina Chickadee perches near the bird feeder. Oh BTW, those Carolina Wrens tend to build their nest in such odd places. Our garage was left open but at short intervals. This morning DH and I found a newly built nest that just materialized over the weekend. Thanks goodness there are no eggs yet. So we moved the shoebox that the nest was in outside under the eave of the garage. Needless to say they're none too happy about the move !

Nice pics duc and Lily,

duc, yep, when it rains, the Robins come in from everywhere to get worms.

Lily, I've only seen one hummer so far, and it was moving on.

I'm about to go outside, but figured I'd up-load the pics from my "Birds for DG" folder first.

This House Finch couple was eating Black Oil Sunflower seed, yesterday.

Even though most of this male Brown-headed Cowbird was in the shade of the feeder, I still snapped the shutter.

Downy Woodpecker, can't really tell its sex. It never did reposition itself so I could look for the red.

Darn House Sparrows, I got 'em.

Well, after I post this, I'm going outside and check to see if my feeders need topping off - and to freshen up the water in the bird bath.

Hey, the sun is shining, may be able to get some good pics, too.

Lily, cute pics of the swallows and chickadee.

Hack, cute cowbird and juv. Glad the sun is shinning there, here too for a change!

Hack, I like the Mockingbird and others!

Duc, That Oriole is gorgeous and the Red-shouldered Hawk nest is cool!
