help with clematis leaf spot

Villa Park, IL

My 3 year old clematis has suddenly developed yellowing leaves with brown spots. It was not cut down at all last fall and is already blooming and spreading. It is shaded by 3 foot high knockout roses. After some research I realize it needs better air circulation and possibly some copper fingicide? Should I cut the whole vine down to about a foot from the ground? The infected leaves are in the center of the vine, starting from the stem, possibly. Will add photos soon. I think it is a Jackmanii but am not 100% sure. Also, how do I prevent it from spreading to my roses?

Last year, my clematis had lots and lots of yellow leaves, starting at the bottom of the plant. I researched it and found that it may be a result of magnesium deficiency. Last year I watered weekly with a solution of 1 TBS Epsom Salts/gallon of water. This year, I still have yellowing, but not as bad. Have started to water with Epsom salt again and used a good fertilizer. I believe it is a nutritional issue, and is common on Jackmanii. I plan to spread some compost as well, as that area of my garden doesn't get as much TLC as other areas. You might want to test your soil.
