Is it too late for Strawberries??

Huntersville, NC

Hello!
In in the Charlotte, NC area and would like to have some strawberries this summer preferably container grown.

Is it too late and which type of plants should I ask for that have already gotten some winter chill??
Some articles say the plants need some winter chill.

All advice is appreciated
thank you

I am totally new to gardening this year, but I am growing strawberries. I ordered bare root plants from guerneys.com and planted them on 10th May, they are already beginning to flower and growth is good. So... although I don't really know very much, I'd guess it would still be ok to plant strawberries since mine have grown so quickly. You might still find some at a garden centre. Growing from seed - I was told - will likely not produce fruit this year anyway.

And this is them photographed a couple of days ago (first flower!) - today there are more flowers.

Thehanging bag, I made myself after seeing a strawberry hanging bag on a gardening website so I fashioned my own from a shopping bag!

Cute hanging bag! Thank you both for your input!

I got some bare root strawberry plants. These are supposed to leaf, flower and produce fruit this year. We well see!

Ive got a couple of those strawberry hanging pots but not sure they would give each plant the room the directions say they need. Now i need to find the "good rotting compost".

Mine are EverBearers. I think they are supposed to produce all season/ summer long.

Again Thank You all for your input!

50glee, ever-bearers are suppose to produce all summer, but have smaller berries than the June-bearers....or so I've heard.

I don't think you'll have a problem with the hanging bags. I think the room they need is more for the above ground growth than for the roots. My strawberries have very small root systems.

50glee, I sprayed my roots with the terracycle organic worm poop that they put in recycled bottle, they're planted in organic potting soil, so I didn't use any special rooting stuff and they seem to be quite happy, of course rooting stuff may help even more. I also read they didn't need a lot of root space, although it is amazing how much soil it took to fill that bag I have! Good luck, hope it goes well!!

50glee - I live/work within the city limits of Charlotte. We've had the best strawberry growing season EVER! Wish I could tell you the type we have. In think one is Tri-Star.

Anyways, I don't like the taste of either one of them and am planning to pull them all out at some point. I like very sweet strawberries, and these are too tart for my taste - but the grow like weeds!
