What type of Pumpkin will be a BIG grower so I can have a pumpkin patch for the kids? I want a large one to carve. I live in NY zone 5 and is it to late to start?
Want to grow a BIG pumpkin for the kids
Go to Johnny's Selected Seed on line and look at their seed. They will give you the approximate size. That's what I did.
I bought Dill's Atlantic Giant seeds and every one of them came up. They drowned....but they came up big and healthy seedlings. I'm getting a load of top soil tomorrow to raise that end of the garden and I'm planting them again. I've always wanted to grow a giant pumpkin!
One of my friends raised one that weighed 480#'s a couple of years ago. That's to big. He told me to wait to July to plant if I wanted halloween pumpkins. What is your experience?
Who, me? My experience is zip. These were my first pumpkin seeds. But I've been told the same thing about planting in July for Halloween pumpkins.
I wanted to grow a BIG pumpkin! But from all of the reading I've done, it seems that the biggest ones are always grown in the cooler Northern states and Canada. I was surprised that the Dill's pumpkins were listed in the LSU agricultural site as performing well here. Personally, I can only attest to the fact that they definitely do NOT perform well under water. :-(
