Accessible Gardening thread # 11(?)

Carrie, hot anything seems to trigger symptoms in me, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if that were the case this morning. :-(

Yes, Happy Father and Pappy and Poppa and Papa and Dad and Daddy's Day to everyone who, regardless of blood relation, is important in the life of a child and gives that child his attention... :-)

Happy Fathers Day Brother You Have Earned the Right !

Midland City, AL

Thanks, Carrie. I don’t have any bio children. But, I guess since I receive Father’s Day calls from Kay’s daughters I’ve been cast in that role anyway. As a Father’s Day novice, I do have a few Father’s Day questions. Do fathers actually have to wear the “interesting” ties and shirts and such we are given? Since it is my Father’s Day dessert, do I get to eat the entire peanut butter/chocolate pie or do I still have to share? How should I respond to being given the gift of a t-shirt with a snarling bear on it? Lol.
Hi, Sarge. “Sarge” is what my SDs and GD call me when they think I’m being to bossy. Lol. Retired AF, in my case. My wife was introducing me to an old high school boyfriend who ended up as one of “The few and the proud”. (A Marine, for those who aren’t up on recruiting slogans). She explained to him. “Jim is an Air Force Sergeant “. She laughed and said, “I decided to “Aim High.” He gave me a wicked grin and said to Kay, “That must be why you missed, Sugar.” Lol.
I’ll get your gladiolus on their way tomorrow, Debra. Wish I could send you some of this rain. Raining again today. At least, that makes it cooler.
Scraps, milk thistle helps with kidney stones too. You can usually find it with the vitamins and herbs at Wal-Mart so it’s easy to find. Melinda used it successfully. I tried it once and was sure Kay had done something terrible to me. I didn’t drink much water with it when I took it. I burped and gray “smoke” came out of my mouth. It freaked me out! I didn’t know anything about milk thistle. Kay and the girls couldn’t stop laughing long enough to explain what was happening. I thought my insides were on fire! Lol.
Vickie, there is a belated b’day surprise coming your way so be nice to the postman. I think the composition above will be even nicer when the ‘Purple Knight’ alternanthera you sent is a little larger. That is the nice thing about foliage gardening, timing isn’t crucial.
Hope all is going well, Katiebear. (Jim)

Jim,As an oldtimer at supervising fathers day gifts, I can answer your questions. You have to wear the weird ties, shirts and socks one time when said child is around. As for the peanutbutter, chocolate pie. You're lucky if you get more than one peice. LOL! Wear that snarling bear with pride. BTW knowing Jim and Kay, They're probably surragate parents to half the county.LOL
I'm getting some milk thistle pronto. Is there anything else good for high BP besides hawthorn?
I dearly love surprises! Thank you, Thank you!
I'm always good to my maillady, even tho she wont drive 2 more miles to deliver mail to my house. LOL

My daughter (who has lived with me her entire life, so it's not as if she spent a summer at sleep-away camp during which my tastes changed) makes me cake for my birthday, for mother's day breakfast, etc. Now I very pointedly eat two bites (or less) of cake any time I am served it in public (weddings or whatnot), I NEVER order it in a restaurant or choose it at a buffet, basically, I do NOT like cake. (She should know that by 16, no?) On Mother's Day, however, I almost cheerfully choked it down for breakfast. Part of the deal. Yes, you have to wear the stuff, Jim.

Hi everybody,

I had a wonderful week with Amma.

I'm back in San Diego now and waiting to see the results of x-rays I had done this morning. There is something wrong with my right ankle. Also with my right thumb. The doctor was stumped on both so had the x-ays done. NO real problem with the thumb but the ankle hurts. I have a cane. Better I should lose 100 lbs but one thing at a time.

More when I've got more time and information.

Hugs all around, katie

Where's TPlant?

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

I dunno. I had some stomach-digestion-continence problems, and I ended up losing about 15 lbs. (??) I don't recommend that technique for weight loss, though. Also, we have this big anniversary party coming up in August and DH responds to stress by eating and I, by NOT eating. So he gets larger and I get smaller. But all the weights I have been in my life (according to PatientsLikeMe.com) vary between low and high of normal for my height, and most of the time I'm right in the middle. I have no way to weigh myself. I'm just seeing bones that didn't used to be there.

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

Carrie, Do we need to scold you?
I rarely tell anyone to eat. but if you can keep it down eat a little something anyway. I'm with you I'll eat cake but really love pies and cookies.(sugar free) If i drink a little coke than eat some soup and rice or pudding it'll usually stay down. I've been thinking of your party.
I use a cane most of the time too Katie.Glad you're back. Let us know what the Doc says. Take care. I need to lose about a hundred lbs too. It'd be easier for my knees and hips.

mulege, Mexico

The doctor gave me a new anti-inflammatory to try. Called Meloxicam - I've tried many other with mo hlep - this one WORKS!!!!! No vicodin for three days. This is a serious ant-inflammatory and my knees and hips don't hurt. I can walk with no trouble. Brings home that I need to relly check out the anti-inflammatory diet recommended by Dr. Hyman (the Ultrametabolism doctor).

I'll be here in San Diego another week or so to have the follow-up visits and see if the X-rays showed anything in the thumb or my ankle. I'm not too worried but want to get checked out before returning home. Home is now into it's hot and humid weather so I'm not minding too much another week in San Diego. I do miss my dogs and Tony. And my garden.

Hugs, katie

Hi friends,
I guess here is as good as anyplace to let you know something. My subscription at DG expires on June7. Even though $20 isn't much money, it is more than I can spare at the present time. I will miss all of you tremendously.
Please know that I will have you each and many more in my heart and prayers even if I am no longer here.
This is totally due to finances and not at all related to any recent web site changes. I have had extra medical expenses for myself, Elvis and also 1 of my cats. Need to see the dentist , etc.
Maybe things will change in the next couple of weeks, but I just don't see how right now.

Hugs and prayers all around,
Sheri/BB

My 32-year-old niece died unexpectedly yesterday. For many reasons, it was a blessing for her and the family, especially for her four children. Right now, my sister is distraught, of course. She and her husband lost one of his two sons to suicide 18 months ago and this death brings their grief back full force, so it is doubly difficult. Aside from the familial regret, for me, though, it reinforces the frustration of having been "gifted" with MS. Where I would normally go for comfort and renewal--digging in the dirt, and cleaning up the plantings, and getting lost in the delight and deep satisfaction of what's growing in MY yard--it is too unrelentingly hot to do *anything* but come straight in the house and stay there. While I know that part of the release is the physical activity and I could find something indoors to do, cleaning house just ain't the same thing. :-) I do know how lucky I am that my conditions aren't more severe. It is only in situations like this one I feel sorry for myself and need to "wahhhhh..." Nice to have an outlet for that here.

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

Debra,
I am so sorry for your family tragedies that are and have recently occurred. I will be praying of for the peace that passes all understanding to surround the loved ones.
working in the dirt and with flowers helps me get my mind in a better zone. I just wish my stamina would increase so I could spend longer periods of time. I know that will come though with steady increase of activity.

Hugs all around,
Sheri

PS - Thanks to whichever little angel out there gifted me with a subscription extension. That was totally unexpected and I am humbled by the loving gesture.

Midland City, AL

My condolences to your family, Debra. That is a tough situation. I can relate. One of my uncles took his own life in a schizophrenic episode.
It is hard when someone who uses the garden as therapy isn’t able to garden. . Kay seemed angry at something or someone all the time before a man in her survivors group introduced her to horticultural therapy. You could say that the concept for Amargia began with a couple of children’s swimming pools filled with potting soil that he helped her set up on her apartment patio.
The high summer lull when the garden just takes a siesta and the weeks between Christmas and Maudi Gras that pass for real winter here are always difficult periods. Getting thru those times is how Kay got into growing from seeds and propagation. Here, you start seeds for the fall garden in deep summer. Nadine has a game on her PlayStation called “Harvest Moon” which is basically cyber-gardening. The Midnight Garden with its night bloomers was the result of surviving the summer lull. I have my computer landscaping program to play with so I can’t make too many jokes about Nadine’s game. Patsy has her houseplants to get her thru the garden’s downtimes. Melinda has her garden books and plant research. Maybe, we should try to collect the different survival strategies gardeners use when they are temporarily not able to garden.
It is creeping back up into the upper 90’s and with the recent rains the humidity is unreal. Even the humidity tolerant creatures like Kay and the frogs consider it too much and are looking for places to escape. :-)
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. (Jim)

SE/Gulf Coast Plains, AL(Zone 8b)

I’m so sorry, Debra. Your poor sister! There is 9 parts heartbreak and one part relief in a situation like that. But, so often we feel guilty for feeling that sense of relief. That makes it particularly hard.
Vickie, to help with high BP, try to include lots of foods in the onion and garlic family in your diet. But, aside from hawthorn, the only herb I know that helps is licorice. That is a taste Jim dislikes so I’ve never gotten him to try it. Licorice is one of those flavors people either love or hate. I love it myself
The supplement Q10 is the only other thing I can think of. I don’t know much about it myself, but some people swear a supplement of Coenzyme Q10 (a.k.a, ubiquinone) can help with hypertension.
Sarge, I learned that gifts from children the age of your youngest can be very tricky. My GS gave me a picture he drew for Mother’s Day. Everyone was complimenting him on such a pretty picture of Taterdog with a flower. He was indignant. We came to find out it was a picture of Grandma working in the garden. LOL. You still have to display those pictures on the fridge though.
Katiebear, hope your ankle and thumb get better soon. The hand and foot both in pain at the same time must be frustrating.
Sheri, good to hear you will still be around.
Need to help Jim put his new recumbent bike together He is getting serious about losing weight again. Have a blessed day, Everyone. Kay*

Debra, I'm so sorry about your neice. My SIL sister died in similar circumstances and he was devastated.Prayers and hugs for you and family.
I wonder if it'd help to get on line and google flower nurserys and flower bulbs and periennials, seed companys and see if you can find some new companys to check out on DG flower sources. I 'll do just about anything to keep myself connected to something flower.
Sheri, Just so glad you're still with us on DG.
Kay LOL I really love cooked onions and garlic. My breath may lose me a few fiends tho. Speaking of friends. I got the beautiful container gardening book today. I sat down and looked at the pictures but have to wait till tomorrow to read it. Thank you. It was a very sweet thing to do. Also have another eye doctor appointment tomorrow to get my eyes measured again. Want to look around Lowes anyway.
I feel so very lucky. I have friends here that would loan me money and i've got you sweet people for support and a gift just when i need it most. Thank you just don't express my feelings enough.
The bank is still holding my money where i can't write checks. I'm changing banks as soon as this mess is over. I also have to go back to the sherrifs office. They made all kinds of mistakes on the forgery papers. I told DD i just might charge them with Senior neglect. DD said "Mom , They do this to everyone. LOL
Vickie

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Mom, they do this to everyone? Yeesh, charge her with a filthy mouth!

Debra, I am so sorry for your family's losses. I think Vickie's idea of window-shopping online is a good one.

I am having a really hard time with the heat this year, too - which I always deny - so I am absolutely with you there, too. Went out to my garden at dusk (after it had rained and cooled down) and just absorbed the peace and smells and sights and sounds coming from the little garden off the patio. I got a few whopper mosquito bites, too, but it was worth it.

SE/Gulf Coast Plains, AL(Zone 8b)

I've come to understand why farming folk rose before dawn. It is the best time to work outside, but I'm not a morning person. Think you can truly re-train yourself with willpower or are you stuck with your natural circadian rhythms?
Do you have a cassette player, Vickie? Almost everyone has gone to CD players and digital now. The reason I ask is I have gardening books on tape that might keep you out of mischief while your eyes heal.
Good reminder, Carrie. Gardeners can get so focused on working in the garden that we forget to take time to just appreciate the beauty in an uncritical way. Kay*

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

LOL Carrie, Stay away from those mosquitoes and Those horrible knats that swarm in clouds and dive bomb people.I never take my garden for granted. It helps take depression away.
I just bought a cassette player. My old one finally bit the dust and i have too many John Denver cassettes.
Thanks I'll need something to keep me out of trouble.A mind can get into a lot of trouble if there is nothing positive to stimulate it. Beleive me i know.

I truely don't think you can retrain yourself to be a morning person. I tolerate it but am much happier sleeping late and staying up late.
I injoyed reading my container book today.
Vickie

(Debra) Garland, TX

Thank you everyone. The memorial service is this morning. Have a sinus/cold/something unpleasant condition and my sister has "ordered" me to stay home. :-) It isn't often she gets to play the big sister and she thoroughly enjoys it when she can. LOL She is also a proud woman. I think because I have made all the arrangements for her and paid for everything, this might be her way to feel she has given something back by gifting me with her directive. We aren't a formal, appearances-are-everything kind of family, her husband is off the road with her until Sunday, and there will be dozens at the service today for support. And I will still be here for her when everyone else has gone home--so I am obeying my instructions.

Jim, I like the idea of collecting survival strategies. I keep mail order garden center catalogs to go through. Also have the Taunton series of Idea Books. Front Yard, Back Yard, Curb Appeal, Stonescaping--gosh, they are ALL gorgeous. The original back porch on my house was enclosed to make a sort of room. It really doesn't function for much more than a pass-through to the back yard. There is a long window wall facing east that lets in lots of morning light--and heat because, unlike the wooden windows on the rest of the house, they are old aluminum frame windows. When the conversion was done, the previous owners left all the door openings with jambs and frames. Maybe I can close the openings, clean out all the accumulated stuff that got dropped in "to put away later" and set up a place for houseplants and seeds and such. An idea worth pondering...

Carrie, ooof, the heat the heat the heat. While one of the hottest June's on record, here, it is still cooling off to below 80 overnight. That's going to end soon as we get into July. Love the idea of enjoying the night scents and sounds and I'd better do it quick. LOL (Acknowledging the physical drain IS difficult, isn't it. )

Kay, if I could make myself get up early and go out, even with the heat, it would probably help. But I have always slept until the last minute, gotten up only when I had to, and rushed around to get out on time. Have usually used sleep as an escape. The older I get, the more I realize that I might regret not taking advantage of now to do things I might not be able to do later. So maybe it is time to try retraining my internal clock and escaping more to the dirt world than to the Land of Nod ? :-)

Vickie, anytime your cassette player stops working, let me know. My company recycles electronics and we usually have perfectly good working players that are going to be scrapped. I would be happy to ship you one.

Hi - I'm back abriefly to catch up with everyone. I'be been reading a lot and generally loafing. Will see my doctor next week sometime, then head home where the heat and humidity are intense right now. I miss Tony and the dogs but not the heat and humidity.

I've been listening to hypnosis tapes on enjoying weight loss and they have a suggestion which might help for those times when it's too hot to go out in the yard or physical problems prevent it. It is to make a list of things you can do. (Their suggestion is to put it on the refrigerator and rrefer to it before eating mindlessly.) For any of us it's something to do and then check when necessary. Often, I can't go out because my knees are so bad I can't stand. I have lots of crafts I can do sitting down and I need to make a list and get stuff organised so I don't have to jump up and look for supplies.

My ankle pain is much better between the new anit-inflammaory and staying off my feet reading. Also, the thumb doesn't hurt it just looks weird and the doctor agreed it should be x-rayed due to the appearance - no pain and I can still use it.

I'm counting my blessings and wishing the best to all of you.

hugs, katie

So glad you are having such a wonderful trip, Katie.

Praying safe travel and sending a big hug,
Sheri

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

Debra, I think you'll find as you get older you will need less sleep and horror of horrors will find your self awake at all kinds of odd early hours to injoy your flowers. LOL I never beleived it would happen to me untill it did. I've even started sleeping in the hottest part of the day. I used sleep as an escape too.
I just bought a cassett player, so i'm good for awhile. But thank you. I don't suppose you recycle Web TV,s or MSN2,s do you?
The counciling center where i go has a meeting room with several east windows. One of the councelors brought her african violets up there for the east light a couple years ago. Those violets are blooming like none i've ever seen. They are just covered in blooms right now.
Katie, Glad you are back with us. Also glad you're staying off that ankle. Let it heal girl.Know you'll want to chase those dogs up and down those arroyos later.
I like the idea of putting the things i can do on the refrig.and then crossing them off. I get overwelmed at how much i need to do and sometimes feel i'm going around in circles. I 'm trying to get organized. I usually hate being organized. I love chaotic oranization. but with my memory it dont always work out so good anymore. What kind of crafts do you like. I like crochet, a little painting, memory books. decorating unusual objects, sewing and just making pretty odds and ends, specially Christmas stuff.
Birdie, How are things with you. You have'nt said much about yourself lately.

Vickie, I will ask the warehouse guys to check.

Kay may get up at dawn to beat the heat, but those of us who know her know not to try talking to her before 9 a.m. Well, by 7 or 8 you can usually get simple, monosyllabic responses. Before then though, it’s grunts and growls. DEFINITELY, not a morning person.
I’m sleeping a lot lately just to escape the pain for awhile. I’ve set up an appointment. I’m going back on the Methocarbamol. I may try doing without the Tramadol, but I just can’t make it without the Methocarbamol.
Painting and putting up the new baseboard in the den/workroom. I decided on “Rich Amber” for the floor and “Navaho White” for the ceiling.
Kay also has me painting some decorative concrete work for a new raised bed, but it is in small enough sections for me to paint inside. This raised bed in the Accessible Garden (w/c garden) has become a more complicated project than I thought it would be. But, I can see Kay’s reasoning. The pedestal it is sitting on was open which made an ideal hiding place for snakes and other critters so she is closing it in. We want it to be the Inaccessible Garden for snakes. (Jim)

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

Thanks Debra, I'm sure i can find one online if this one fails me. Or even better i can force my self to break down and go all the way computer.
I know exactly how Kay feels. The earth and all within belongs to alians before noon.
Snake inaccessable is #1 on my gardening list too. I even found a brazen little grass snake in one of my pots this spring.
Jim,Hope you get those pain levels down to manageble releif. I'm sleeping alot to avoid depression. I still can't access my bank account. Ever felt you were being abused by a business as much as from a theif?
It would do me good to do something creative. But it gets harder everyday to simply get out of bed.I keep trying to sort my cabinets and drawers out but the job is getting to seem out of controll.
Tomorrow if my check comes, I'll go to town and try to do something nice for someone else. Thats about an 8 point uplift. I could go buy a pretty whatnot from Sal. Army, another 8 pointer. Than pack it up to give back to Sal. Army. Does anyone get the idea i'm an impatient booger. LOL
Vickie

Midland City, AL

Vickie, you might want to try a guilt-free “me, Me, ME!” day. A little self-centeredness can be a virtue. If you don’t keep yourself built up, you can end up with what the shrinks call “compassion fatigue.” Spoil yourself a little. Then, tell us all about it. :-) (Jim)

Ozone, AR(Zone 6a)

LOL Jim, Thats what i plan on doing on the 4th weekend.I'm going out to play bingo and watch fireworks in Ozark. Fireworks over the Ark River.

(Debra) Garland, TX

Biiiiinnnnnggggooooo!!!!! That is my sister's salvation. Every Friday night, she sends the kids off to skate or with other relatives and takes herself to bingo. She wins a lot, too. Our paternal grandfather was a professional gambler and she got that lucky gene. I didn't, but I don't enjoy it like she does, either. LOL

So, you go have a great time, Vickie. Win big, eat lots of picnic stuff, and be blessed with a good breeze to keep off the mosquitoes while you watch those gorgeous lights over the water.

Hello everyone, I just read for about an hour to catch up. I am praying for each of you that have needs but don't have time to speak to each seperately. My life has gotten too blooming busy to have time to do anything for myself. I have been taking care of everybody but me. Now I have an ear that is swelled shut and one that is getting there. The dr said swimmers ear but it is from sweat while working in this crazy humidity and heat. I think I am melting slowly. I will try harder to find time to pop in and check on you guys this week. Love and Prayers, scraps

I'm hoping for cool breezes too. It was really nice out tonight. about 75* I built a campfire and just watched the flames. Hope to get grocerys tomorrow.and maybe a tent or cot.
Vonne and i have an appointment with councelor tomorrow to see if we can get things settled and communicate better. Bet Vonne cancels out.
I need to water my potplants tomorrow also.

Cando,
I laughed at your last sentence. Can't help but wonder just how many potplants you have and do you have them hidden?

So, Vickie, how did it go with Yvonne? I've been wrestling with my DD all week, month, my life, so I am interested.

Ladies and gentlemen, DH and I are going on an actual vacation! We'll be gone from tomorrow for probably a week. I'll have my computer with me, but who knows how often I'll have internet access. My DSS is graduating with his conducting degree. We get to see the grandkids!

Yea, Carrie!!! Hope you have a lovely time...

Carrie, have a wonderful time! :-)
