Morning Glories 2010 #05

I don't see any problem with growing them in the ground. Actually that is ideal if you have decent soil and a place for them to climb. Maybe Nicole was thinking they were I. purpureas. (Which can get pretty invasive under the right conditions.)

Jon - I think it is going to look marvelous! Be sure to share photos ... somewhere! ;-)

yes, LOL! I had an i pur last year on the arbor and it dropped all kind of seeds to the ground and there are little seedlings everywhere!!!

Tokyo, Japan(Zone 10a)

Push comes to shove Becky I'll e mail em to you, where there's a will there's away!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

:-) :-) :-)

OH! There is a way ... probably many! LOL!

Thanks, Nicole for clarifying! I had a feeling it was purps you were talking about ... Hee, hee!

Becky, in your experience, will the i nils seeds not survive my cold winter if they drop to the ground? I had an Akatsu no Murasaki last year that I planted in the ground and it produced alot of seeds but if any dropped to the ground they did not come up like the hot pink i pur that I planted in the container. I've been digging out i purpurea babies and giving them away for 2 weeks now. I'm getting ready to spray them.

Nicole - I. nil seeds don't fair well in freezing temps especially if left out in the open. If they are buried ... then there is a chance they could survive and grow. But most seeds from MGs fall on the top of the ground and stay there unless they somehow get mixed down into the soil. If you get snow ... then I would say the chances are reduced even more for I. nil volunteer sprouts.

I. purpureas are like weeds, IMHO! They can survive a lot of abuse and tough growing conditions and produce a LOT of seeds! LOL!

We did get snow this crazy winter!!!

So, I just went outside and the purple flaked was FULL of blooms. OMG! I am so excited. It is so pretty.

YAY! It is MY favorite I. purpurea vine! Glad you are enjoying it, too! :-) :-) :-)

When is the right time for me to transplant them to bigger pots?

Thank you:o)

patootie, so that's what Pres Bush looks like. I left mine in a plastic cup
too long. I just put it in a hanging basket, so it will be awhile before I get
blooms. It's so pretty.

This summer I planted so many seeds that I received in Round Robin
group trades. I didn't know where to plant everything, and I still have
some in dixie cups that need transplanting. Next year I need to be more
selective and sow less seeds, but I do want to plant more morning glories
next year. Especially the blue japanese ones.

Tony, your MG's are beautiful, the blue one is my favorite....Wow that's
a lot of seeds you have. What variety is that?

helenahkh, you have a lot of blooms, lucky you. It's cool how the flowers
come out different on the same plant.

Becky, that Fuji no sora is beautiful. Blue just seem to be my favorite
color for MG'S. Is that a bucket you have it in?

Gautier, MS

Thanks zinniared, yes it's really neat to get 2 types of blooms on the same vine!

I'm getting lots of repeats, just one neat one of from Jackie. I pretty bloom from the other day your Lavender Beauty Jackie, thanks.

You could try using the excess MG seeds as a laxative as the Chinese and Japanese did in ancient times, Tony, although I am not conversant in dosage.

Lola, it is good to grow out the vine to 1 to 4 true leaves so you have a nice root system developed on the transplant.

Debra - WOW! The bloom in this photo look 3D! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=7844263
Jumps right out at you! A GREAT photo!!!! All your blooms are looking good! :-)

Helena - Lovely Lavendar Beauty! Though it looks more sky blue than lavender! ;-)

Lola - Oh my! You have a lot of babies growing in those pots! Because you have so many in one pot, I'd consider transplanting them each in their own pot or the ground now. The reason being that the roots are going to get all tangled up and MGs do NOT like their roots disturbed. Use a spoon and scoop them root and all one by one out of the potting soil and just transplant each in a bigger pot or the ground. Try to keep the dirt around the roots to protect them. Any root disturbance will cause them to go into shock and it will take a week or two for them to recover. I know ... been there and done that already this season!

Helena, Love your Blue Lavender Beauty. Mine was also blue last yr.
I really liked it and yours is a beauty too.
Linda, Yes that's Pres Bush, one of my favorite Morning glories.
Beautiful blooms Debra.

More repeats from my i. nil cross (Early call pink x Akatsuki no Umi), this one looks very uniform with it's royal blue color and its nearly consistent white margin. I hope this doesn't become too redundant to y'all.

It was raining hard this morning so all my MGs are probably ratty looking.

mine too.

Here are 3 blooms this morning from my Early call pink x Akatsuki no Umi cross. I just love the royal blue with the white margin.

Here is a repeat from my 3-way cross. The flowers are starting to form a lavender halo around the center. This one is hard to see because of the rising temperatures. This one is about 4-4.5" across.

I love zinnias. They are one my favorite flowers.

Thank you for the advice Becky.

I have started repotting some of them.

That blue is gorgeous!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Yes, gorgeous blue Tony but I like the other bloom too.

Norfolk, VA

I have 6 large blooms this morning from my Early call pink x Akatsuki no Umi cross. I had to move the big leaves out of the way to reveal this cascade.

Here is a Japanese morning glory, Ipomoea nil, I have tagged as N32, showing its first brilliant flower in the early morning light. I was transfixed when I saw it. It also has nicely variegated leaves to make this quite a remarkable critter.

Here is a photo of one of the leaves of N32. I like this one very much...most of the rest of the plants, all unknowns with N numbers, have plump flower buds and the really big show will soon start!
