I have a passionfruit vine that we just picked up from Kmart. Poor thing has some yellow spotting on the lower leaves, buds dropping, and its vines are twisted together from opposite ends of an upside down bamboo "U" about a foot and a half high. (It was the best looking one too!)
What size container should we put it in? At the moment I've got it in about 12"h, 12"deep round pot, but is that too small? I read their roots are shallow, but I'm not entirely sure how shallow is shallow!
We're planning on giving it a stake leaning up against a wall to climb, and bringing it in for the winter.
Thanks everyone!
What advice/ size container for a passionfruit vine?
Even if it's going to need a larger pot eventually, it's best to put things in a pot that are appropriate for the size they are now, then move them gradually into bigger pots as they grow. Otherwise if you put a tiny plant in a huge pot it makes it way easier to overwater (and it's not that hard to overwater in the first place! LOL) Without seeing a picture of the plant in its pot it's hard to say whether the current container is a good size or not.
The container should be large to get the plant going quickly, but it should be a low wide container rather than a tall one. They like a lot of water but need to be well drained.
As the plant will climb and attach tendrils rapidly, it should be placed by the wall you want it to climb as soon as possible. It will need something to climb on and likes full sun, but not hot dry wind.
The flowers are produced on new vines, so old vines (last season's) should be pruned off.
Thanks for all the advice! I don't think there are old vines from last season-- there are two vines maybe 4 inches tall, and then two much larger vines that are around 3 feet tall. Metrosideros-- when you say shallow, would a foot deep be deep enough? ecrane3--the pot it is in now is maybe three inches taller and about an inch wider than the pot it came in, so I don't think overwatering will be a problem (esp. since the 90 degree weather today seems to have made most of our plants feel a bit fried!)
It will probably graduate to a bigger pot soon though. (I'm thinking once I harvest the kale from the the pot a foot deep and about two feet in diameter!)
We're in zone 6a, so I'm not sure the season will be long enough to manage fruiting, but flowers instead of tantalizing dropping buds would be good. ;D
