Anyone care to weigh in on these planters? Do they work or are they a gimmick?
Topsy Turvy planters
Mine seemed to be working fine until we got 35 MPH wind gusts that snapped the stem....and it was setting tomatoes and had a lot of blooms....8-(
I tried growing topsy turvy tomatoes before it became a fad with special planters. My experience was the same as yours Moon. The ones I've seen don't make many tomatoes, either. I guess if you don't have any room it is the way to go. A few fresh tomatoes beat none at all.
I am going to use mine for annuals like petunias and verbenas....I should wind up with a huge ball of color by inserting small plants into small slits in the sides of the planter. I was really quite upset as the plant was over 2 feet tall and had set fruit and had a bunch of blooms.
Sounds like a good idea to me.
I've found that just about any sort of hanging, bag-type planter means that you're a slave to watering. If you like to water at least twice a day every day, then...perfect! But they seem to be incredibly difficult to keep moist.
I use the Miraclegro potting mix with the water holding crystals mixed in. Still have to water at least every day to day and a half, but down here we have to do that for most containers.
You would think with our humity that we wouldn't have to water so much but it isn't true. I guess it is the heat. It is 95 today in North Louisiana. Every one can live by the Bible today. The Good Book says to earn your bread by the sweat of your brow. It's not just my brow that got sweaty today. Love it!!!!
Oh my, I hear ya Jim. We also have an almost steady breeze that dries out things too. It is soon to become my DHJim's task, as I am leaving Thursday to see my daughter in Brisbane and will not be back home until late July. it is the start of their winter there.....I get to have a real weather spring time there as the low night temps will be in the low to mid forties and daytime highs close to or in the 60's or occasional 70.
I hope you have a good time with your family. My girl just lives in Ohio and we just get to see twice a year. We like to have gone nuts when they were in Germany for five years.
Thanks jim. I do understand believe me. And, it gets worse when there are grandkids....grin
Yep, I could do with out seeing the kids but I missed them grands. Now they are both grown.
