A friend sent me this photo this morning to see if I know what it is - I've never seen anything like it! She lives on the coast in east-central Florida. Any ideas?
Bug ID please
Gross!
Now I know why I dont live in Florida !
The STRANGE BUGS down there. < : O
Good luck finding out what this is!!
Looks like a cricket to me although I'm not sure which type. Here are the ones that are in Bug Files--I didn't see one immediately that looked like an exact match, but I think you'll see the similarity in shape at least. http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=cricket&searcher%5Bbugorder%5D=&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&Search=Search I'm sure there are lots of types of crickets that aren't in Bug Files yet.
ecrane3, I wouldn't have thought of this thing as a cricket, but it does look similar to one of the ones in your search results - thank you for the input. Would be awesome if anyone knew its name. The long antenna (?) is super creepy!
I love living in FL, but it does have a lion's share of strange creepy-crawlies!
If you post it on the Bug ID forum or even maybe the Florida forum someone will probably know which type it is.
This is a nymph of a katydid-like insect in the family Tettigoniidae - see http://tinyurl.com/2dh3ouf for a similar example from Texas.
Thank you very much for the ID, suunto!!! I will pass this along to my friend!
With your help, I think I found the FL version: Lea floridensis - Florida true katydid (http://bugguide.net/node/view/35543/bgimage)
