New to this site and would love some ideas for zone 4

Burnsville, MN

I have an apartment building with a spot light shining into our house and want to plant a tree to hide the light from blasting into our house at night. It looks like the lights are on it is so bright! So my problem is that the telephone lines run between us and them and I don't want a tree that will be too large and need to be lopped off the top, they just look sad when they do that. I also have an annoying black walnut tree in the front yard that nothing will grow by except the pesky weeds of course. Any ideas, I sure could use some help.

Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Have you thought about having the line to your house burried? After an unannounced visit from the power company tree trimmers, I said never again and had ours burried. Cost a couple thousand or so, but definitely worth it not to have my trees mangled!

You might also consider calling the owner of the apartment complex and complaining about the light--they may not realize that it's shining right into your house like that. Or if they won't do anything about it, check with the city about whether there are any laws that would protect you from a nuisance like that. With the overhead lines I'm not sure you'll be able to plant anything that's really big/tall enough to block the light. Blackout curtains would probably be a more effective solution if you're not able to get the apartment to move or turn off the light.
