Mushrooms

West Palm Beach, FL

Does anyone know what type of mushrooms these are? They are growing in the spot where a large tree used to stand. We cut it down and ground the roots, so the area is still covered with wood shavings (haven't gotten around to sodding yet). They come up at night and die during the day. I snapped these on my phone this morning. They seem to be getting more plentiful each day.

This is just a shot in the dark, but look at this info.

Thanks for the link. I now know more about that type of mushroom than I ever imagined! I suppose once I dig the layers of wood pulp out of the area once I'm ready to sod, the mushrooms should stop growing; but for now, they don't harm anything, and they only assist (according to that link), in the decomposition of the wood, amending the soil. Thanks.

GRIN....you are too welcome. I am always glad to contribute to one's further edification in the field of fungi....LOL

I turned the wood/dirt mixture over a few times on Saturday. This morning, the mushrooms are invading the area! Should I be worried? I have grass and a tree in the imminent area, but I doubt they will penetrate the lawn or mess with the tree. Should I just let them do what they want to do? I intend to remove the wood chips and sod the area (eventually), but I'm not sure what to do in the interim. Any suggestions?

I personally would do nothing. Turning the soil just excited them....LOL

If I'm not mistaken, mushrooms only grow on dead wood. They won't hurt the trees.

Haha yeah I'm sure I helped along the spores! As much as I would love to let it all break down and amend the soil, my HOA will eventually send me a letter to sod the area and I will have to remove the wood so the roots can penetrate.

Wow, I think we have a variety of those growing out of our mulch! The cap color is lighter, but they do have those dangling tassels. Thanks for that link!

You are correct Jim. They need decomposing food sources.
