Mulching with coffee grounds?

Madison Heights, VA

I have access to literally tons of fresh coffee grounds everyday. I had been saving them for the compost heap and was curious as to other uses, since my pile now smells like a nice house blend. A quick Google search led me to an article that talked about mulching with coffee grounds. The article stated you could use it for all types of plants. I guess my question is: Does anyone have any experience using grounds this way? The article said they were high in nitrogen and were great for tomatoes. I'm wondering if they would effect the taste of veggies? The article mentioned it as a slug repellent too. Being organic they shouldn't burn plants, should they? Can you mulch right up to the tomato, cuke, etc?

Hi Tylersays,

I am not sure about using fresh coffee grounds. I do add coffee grounds to my compost, but after it's been brewed.

As far as using it as a mulch, brewed coffee grounds are fine in certain doses. I wouldn't add alot because coffee grounds are somewhat acidic and will eventually change the pH of your soil. Adding some coffee grounds is fine since tomatoes love soil that is slightly acidic.

Brewed coffee grounds are great to use as a mulch with blueberries, azaleas, and hydrangeas too (if you want the blooms to be pink instead of blue).

I hope this helps!

Hello TeeRiddle! Yeah - I actually meant fresh "used" coffee grounds. :)
