I need help saving an old Wisteria. The bark is splitting and turning black (see picture). Any idea what caused this and what, if anything I can do to save it?
Old Wisteria Dilemma
I'm not sure what has caused your plant to do that but it doesn't look like anything you can fix. The good news is, the roots are probably fine and should produce more shoots from the base as the old stems die.
Plantfreak is spot on, I have trimmed my wisteria back to within six inches from the ground and new shoots usually come springing for within days. Good luck. That looks like it has been eaten from the inside out, If theat is the case it just may be that the root system is damaged or destroyed also. Hay.
Thanks Plantfreak and Haystack. I think we'll cut it back later this year. We were going to build a new arbor anyway and would have to cut it back so we'll stick to our plans. Thanks again.
Just make sure you don't wait too late to cut your wisteria. If the arbor isn't up by the end of August you may want to wait until next year to cut it back.
