Hydrangea Paniculata "Limelight"

Pelham, NY

I have a spot against a wall in a shadow where I would like to place one Limelight plant. In front of the shadow, the area is bright and gets a few hours early morning sun. I wanted to see what a few of you think first about the exposure and if you think my chances would be better with "Nikko Blue" or the same. I understand that sometimes with hydrangeas how much direct sunlight you have affects the blooms but these plants are also highly recommended for shade.

Morning sun is fine for most hydrangeas.

It won't be getting any direct sunlight as it is in a shadow. Outside the shadow, a few steps away it is bright. I am also not sure if the exact location where I am placing the shrub is considered bright shade or heavy shade so I'm trying to be as detailed as I can.

The spot you're describing sounds like it will have enough ambient light to support a Hydrangea although the H. paniculatas are more sun tolerant so if you try the 'Limelight' and it doesn't seem to thrive there you may want to try a H. quercifolia (Oakleaf) since they are more shade tolerant.

Thanks! I think you're right, this may be a hit or miss situation. Also, with the Oakleaf you hit it right on the nose because I noticed several comments in the forums that it seems to tolerate deep shade. Essentially if I love the limelight enough I may risk it because I haven't seen any really good photos of the Oakleaf hydrangeas. If anyone has any good photos of their Oakleaf please share. I wouldn't mind a yellow flowering rhododendron there either but I don't know too much about them and photos on the web are very limited with this shrub also.

My Limelight is in the sun and is perfectly happy there.
