I have so few garden places where there is full sun and poor sandy soil but I couldn't resist indoor sowing several varieties of zinnias last March. I have so few places to plant the young plants. Package directions say to space them 12 inces apart but I just placed three small plants (about 6 inches high) in a large plastic pot (about 15" deep and 12-14" dia at the top). Does anyone think they will survive there and are there things I can/should do to help them survive.
Zinneas in containers
They should be fine...feed them every couple weeks with a liquid fertilizer, give them lots of sun and good air circulation, keep the soil just slightly moist (not wet) and remember to deadhead the spent flowers and cut lots of bouquets.....the old country name around here for them is "cut and come again" The more blooms you cut, the more they make.
Wow... thanks for this help moonhowl. When you say "liquid" fertilizer do you mean the stuff that is sold in the stores that is in liquid form or can I get my with Shultz or Miracle Grow (that I make into a liquid at home)? I already have some Shultz Bloombuster granules
Sorry I wasn't clear on that, I meant MiracleGro/Schultz mix it at home liquid. You can add some of the Bloombuster granules at potting time or a slow release granular fertilizer, but it will make the zinnias very happy to have the instant use liquid also. A word of warning, zinnias are susceptible to fungal infections, so make sure they have good air circulation and try to water the containers in the morning so the leaves don't stay wet.
Thank you again moonhowl. I wish there was a zinnias only forum because there is probably a lot to know and share about that beautiful flower
While there is not a zinnias only forum , there is a lot of discussion about them. Here is a link to the annuals forum here on DG. I think you might find a few zinnia lovers there, or on Cottage Gardening Forum, or on the seed saving forum....check the list of forums here on DG.

Oh, I just love zinnas! Enjoy!! Make sure you keep the deadhead for the seeds for next year!
