Announcement - Oct 2

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

CoCo, and there are some of us who are here allllll day long (mememe) and considering that, it's really really cheap:)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I always feel bad when things get out of whack. It is kind of happening again. No one should feel bad because they do or do not pay. I know finances are really tight for some people (me, included) and people are probably more uncertain right now about the future than ever. I feel like contributing because I get a lot of joy from the site. I have made friends here too. I am also sure, somewhere along the line, I have offended people or had my jokes not be appreciated. When I have known things went wrong, I wrote and apologized. Even when we type in little smileys and grins, etc, they are not always understood for the way they were written. I left a post on the 'suggestions for trading' posting about remembering the people we are typing at, are real people with real feelings and their own lives. We don't always know what is happening in other people's lives. With so many of the dot coms going under, we had to expect that Dave would need help at some point. What he has asked for will not make him rich. Nor will he pocket the full amount. He has already 'gone in the hole' for the time he has mantained the site on his own. It is also a big assumption that all 4,000 plus will contribute. All the stuff he has bought already has to add up to a pretty big bill for a guy that just wanted his own little trade tracker. :) I know from reading the announcement that he put a lot of thought into this decision and that it has caused him some grief. We can all decide whether or not to help out, but there is only way to guarantee that DG will survive and grow.

Dave's site is my lifeline to the "world" I live where there is nothing, just the highway reminding me that there is another world out there' Winters are very long, without gardening and going anywhere. I'm tied down to a home business and even when it's slow,I log on to learn and visit you guys' DH called from Texas a minute ago and we discussed the fee Dave is requiring' He said it's worth every cent as he's seen how much happier I am since I joined, and when I'm happy he is too' All I need is an address to send the money order Dave' Sis'

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

So where do we send our check? I'm sure somewhere here there must be instructions....

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

I'm in Dave...don't know how you held out this long.
I'love the idea of helping out other members and want to keep our international friends also. I'd love to be a part of the 'scholarship fund' or whatever you call it.
Let me know and I'm getting in line to kick in!

Thanks, tiG. Sis was asking about that, too.

(and again, a huge thank you to everyone who has supported DG today. It's been an overwhelming day...)

Me in!!!! Going to send off the money order this week! I love this website. It is worth for me. LOL

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I was wondering that too pebble. I was looking for the place to send the check, as we don't use credit cards any more. I didn't ask this morning, as I had to discuss this with dh when we had lunch, and unfortunately, now it's a moot point for me.

DH and I recently made a pact and cut up all our credit cards because we need to pay them off and we have two kids that are in their first year of college, one that graduates from high school this year, and two more to follow. With all the college expenses, graduation expenses, plus our oldest rolled one of our cars on Labor Day, it's just not going to work for us. DH felt really bad when he told me he thought it wasn't a good idea for me to join. We just made this commitment recently to join forces to get our finances in order the best we can in order to make it through the next few years of getting our kids out on their own. Like he put it, "if we start making ammendments to our plan already, we are defeating the purpose. Pretty soon we won't even be following the plan anymore if we keep changing it to suit us." He's right, so I have to say good-bye. I don't blame Dave one bit for doing this, and I'm hoping that maybe DH will get me a subscription for my birthday, Mother's Day or something in the future. Plus, earlier this year, I did subscribe to that other site, and he thinks one is enough for now. (P.S. He just doesn't understand! LOL!) I hope to be back someday, but probably not until dh wants to break our plan for some reason, then I have something I want in exchange. LOL

Blessings,
Joan

I second your post Badseed...(That just sounds bad typing your name! cause we know you aren't!) I could get real angry but it just doesnt matter what anybody here thinks...this is Dave's Site, and if we want to put our two cents in...we will pay for the priviledge.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 7b)

I won't be joining either. It wasn't that long ago when the other site did the same thing and everyone was condemning them, but now it is a great idea. I don't post very often here because it seems like it always turns into a free-4-all and I am not interested in paying to see people argue with eachother.

Best wishes,Venessa

Plymouth, PA(Zone 5b)

HI Everyone,

Dave I understand your decision to make this your fulltime job and wish you well. However my concerns are for the people living on a very limited income, myself included. My husband is disabled and raising 2 kids are you know is not cheap. Therefore I am not sure I will be able to swing the 15.00 to join. One of the main reasons I started coming here was because a cousin referred me here and yes I have met many wonderful new friends that I will miss dearly. But I must think of raising my kids and running a household on my budget before the other luxuries. COCO is right to those that spend money going out to dinner, to the movies etc. I do not have those luxuries so I cannot give them up.

Thanks Schmetterling. I have been asked, told and downright demanded on to change my name! LOL I am considering new names. :) Be nice people. ;) I think I have outgrown the old name. It isn't easy to pick a new name and change is hard for everyone. I have been 'badseed' for three and a half years. I didn't know when I picked it, that I was going to be a seed aholic!

Allen Park, MI(Zone 6a)

I've been thinking about this all day. Where else can you go for less than 4 1/2 cents per day and get the kind of information provided here at DG.

Every time I have posted a question I have received many prompt accurate replies. You sure don't get that type of service from books. Don't any of you take offense to that, I have a LARGE gardening library. But to get a reply from someone who has dirt under their nails and who has experience about yor questions means alot to me.

Now for the people; I've have never met a bunch of nicer more giving people. Yes differences of opinion do arise but things have a way of working out. How many new gardeners have arrived and been flooded with offers of seeds and plants just for the asking. Gardeners are the most generous people in the world.

Dave and Trish have worked very hard to make this site what it is today and its not fair to ask them to use their personal finances to support it.

For those of you who who are in a economic bind I totally understand, I have been there myself. Many more of us may end up there if the current world sitution doesn't improve. For those of us more fortunate at this time why not think about supporting some of our less fortunate gardening friends if you are able. I see several of you have done that already.

I would rather invest $15.00 in DG anytime rather than a magazine; the people are much nicer here. :)

Paul

I just sent you my money. Didn't have to give it a second thought... it's a blessing to be able to have this place to share my ideas and questions and thoughts and love.

I'm proud of you for stating in your mission statement that you are "for Christ" and so I'm behind you 100%!

Love in Christ,

Help Dave, want to give about $100 for the year and help others along, but only looks like I can join, What do I do?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

haighr, when you wish to subscribe someone else, just put their DG name in the first box. (You might want to check with Dave before you do and make sure your intended recipient of a gift subscription hasn't already subscribed, or had someone else submit a gift subscription in their name.)

You can go back to the form and do as many gift subscriptions as you'd like.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

isn't she wonderful???? I wish I could do the same:( My heart just smiled when I saw that haighr, it truly did.

I've Subscribed!!

You're right, I've blown more than $15 on dumber stuff (paisley print pants come to mind!). This site is better than the largest library in the world; it's interactive! I just have one question...

From 'Dave's Garden' forum
Thread: Has anyone thought...
Oct 1, 11:48 AM
Quote "The announcement of the change will either kill DG completely, or it will launch this site into a Golden Age."

Hoping for the latter but fearing the former, What happens to my $15?

OK, I lied, I thought of another question :)
With only paid subscribers can we have regularly scheduled chats? Better yet, couldn't a chat room be open 24/7? Regular meetings could be scheduled or members could check in just to see if anyone is around!

Thanks for a great place Dave & Trish!!

Cape May Court House, NJ(Zone 7a)

Paulgrow you took the words right out of my mouth! I just saw this thread too and believe me I do not have to think twice about joining. DG IS THE VERY VERY BEST ON THE WEB IN MY OPINION AND I AM SURE IT IS TO HUNDREDS OF DAVE'S MEMBERS! As the saying goes Dave and Trish " the check's in the mail" sue

(Zone 6a)

I'm also new to this site.
I'm a commercial grower that markets produce direct.
I don't find many people here that deal in marketing produce.
it seems that when a site gets popular they start charging a fee.
so it looks like I'm back to the garden web forum.
good luck

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

tiG - I don't go out to eat lol!

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

And not but least got minischnuz for one year harrahhhhh

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Count me in. This site is such a great place and I have enjoyed it so much. $15 is a bargain for the help and fun I have had here. Sure can't get this from any magazine.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Can you see how we are coming together as a family and helping out others?I have said numerous times this is my home and my family.I am more than willing to pay for this service.I don't know of anything else I could spend the money on and get the enjoyment I get here.As a dear friend that many of us know and love said its worth it get to pick on him!lol(hum wonder who that could be?)Where else can I go an get abused by my friends and know it's because they love me.he he. But seriously all kidding aside. I come here for a smile,a hug, encouragement, and the wonderful knowledge that is here.Heck I don't even have to ask a question just read the forum and somebody already asked it and thus I have my answer.I don't think you will find a more diverse bunch or gardeners.I can't even imagine the improvements that are forth coming but I am sure we will love them.Dave and Trish your have my support! Count me in on the fund I will be glad to contibute to keep our friends here! Hugs all!

haighr, you are an absolute angel.
What a wonderful thing you have done. My thanks go out to you for doing this.

northeast, IL(Zone 5a)

Thanks Dave for the two week subscription period. I really have to think long and hard about subscribing. I love this site and spend most of my evenings here, but $15.00 is more than I have some weeks for groceries for the three of us. I will take full advantage of these next two weeks, I have really enjoyed the time I have spent here. Maybe something will come up, and I can find the money.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

GH and I are with you 100%, Dave & Trish. I think it's wonderful how involved you are here and that you can do something like this full-time and be with your family.

Considering the fellowship with other gardeners, access to an incredible plants database, the wide variety of forums, and the great photographs, and the hands-on webmaster who cares personally about making this a great place and involves himself with us all...Well, $15 is a bargain for all that. We've spent that much on a couple of plants, or on a meal out.

As far as the childishness and rudeness of a few members here, please remember that the vast majority takes place in General Discussion, not in the gardening forums. This is one forum out of almost sixty.

Take a newspaper, for instance. I might dislike some opinions expressed in my local paper's Editorial section, but I am not going to unsubscribe because a few columnists or letters to the editor upset or offend me; there's a great deal I enjoy, so I just leaf right past that section and on to the good stuff like the Comics, local news, and the Home & Garden section! :o) And Dave's Garden means far more to me than our small-town rag sheet ever did.

This site is awesome and has attacted a super group of people. We've made friends here - actual friends, flesh and blood friends. And we're behind you guys!

:o) Kimberley

I very new to this site. I looked and looked for a place to subscribe, and then realized that it was free. I couldn't understand how a site like this was funded. No ads, no nothing?? So , today's announcement was not a surprise and I have subscribed already. I just received my first box from a secret plant trade and it had over 25.00 worth of perennials in it. Although winter is approaching, I really look forward to Spring and planting new seeds from trades and consider the fee reasonable and fair. Thanks so much for a great site!!!! lou

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Good for u dispatcher welcome
Oh, and we are more than fair! We're friends!
