Has anyone tried this method? I am thinking of trying this. You take 4 bales of straw, cover it with compost & fertilizer, wet it, wait l0 days, then plant. I wonder if a person could use pine needles instead of straw.
Straw bale gardening
do you take the bales apart or just plant on them as big hay cubes? This sounds interesting! If its on the cubes it would be good for raised beds and maybe make it tall enough so you don't have to bend down to plant. haha.
There is a whole straw forum that is open to subscribers. Most of the strawbale folks will be be over there. and yes prettymess , the straw bale is used essentially as a pot. The originator (kentNC) of the idea use ammonium nitrate to decompose a planting hole in the bale. Not for me but works for folks who are dedicated to the idea. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/strawbale/all/
thanks for the info farmer dill! I am a little too suburban to keep straw bales around, but I enjoy reading about all the people who have tons of room for this stuff!
