seed saving from my flowerswill they cross?

State College, PA

Hi Everyone,
I am planning to try to save seeds from a bunch of my flowers for the first time, but I'm worried they might cross with each other. Specifically I am growing multiple types of cosmos, nasturtiums, hollyhocks, and nicotinia. Does anyone know if these plants will cross with each other, or if they should come true from seed? What about various species of poppies? I'm growing several types of paeoniflorum, somniferum, shirly popy, rhoes poppy, flanders poppy, California poppy, and oriental poppy. Will they cross between types and/or with in species?
Thanks for your help!

Perennials seem to grow true for me.I only grow black hollyhocks. The seed I harvest from them always produce black ones.Annuals seem to vary.Cosmos seem to change from year to year. One year mostly pink, next year mostly white etc.I see the biggest varation in marigolds, you never know what you will get.I have never really experienced cross breeding.Mostly just varation in color. The cost is right and they are always pretty. Is it worth it?Yeah,Edge

Hi Edge,
Thank you for your help. I'm just wondering if I can list my collected seeds for trades as the plant I collected them from, or if I need to list a mixture. Guess I'll try growing some and find out.
Happy gardening!

I would just trade them with generic terms.Like cosmo seed. Not candy stripe cosmo seed or daydream cosmo seed.Edge
