Just noticed that something (I guess it was a fox or cat) has virtually snapped the only stem of my sambucus Black Lace and it was doing so well this year (it's second) although small. It's still hanging on by a thread, so to speak. Should I cut it right off (which would just leave a stem with nothing on it!), try to bind it and support it, take cuttings??? Ideas please! (I live in the S.E. of the U.K. and it's still fairly cool at the moment, especially at night if this makes any difference.....)
Sambucus 'Black Lace' - Help!
If it's most of the way broken your best bet is probably to cut it off. Feel free to start some cuttings from it when you do that...not sure if it's the best time of year to take cuttings from these but you've got nothing to lose. The plant should sprout again and be fine in the long run.
The instructions from the grower advise hard pruning for the first year or two anyhow, so if the plant was was doing well before, it should have no problem growing back. I have two of them, also 2 yrs. old now. I love them.
Thanks for the advice - nice to get it from "across the pond!"
I just took cutting a few weeks ago and planted them yesterday, so the timing can't be too far off.
