deadheading tickseed

Honea Path, SC

i'm supposed to 'deadhead' my tickseed plants and normally deadheading means to cut or pinch off the dead flower. if i do this with tickseed it will leave a long bare stem. should i pull out the whole stem or pinch back at the end of the stem? thanks y'all!

I have always cut the stems back so they are level with the foilage. The plants look tidy that way.Cutting the stems back helps the plant put its energy into new growth and produce new flowers.Edge

I cut the stems of my coreopsis (tickseed) back all the way, too. In late summer when the plants start looking ratty and are not reflowering well, I pull them out completely to make way for the tons of babies that have popped up in the last two months. Some of them will bloom before frost. I often plant cosmos seeds in the spaces for lovely fall color.
Pulling them out will not cut down on the number of plants for next year--babies galore will fill in.
I do the same with black-eyed susans, shasta daisies, obedient plant, bee balm, gooseneck loostrife and some other prolific perennials.
