These little plants were growing under my squash plants. I am not sure what they are but they come up in little patches and have really deep roots! I think they might be some sort of grass but I am not sure. I just thought maybe someone might recognize them? I also thought it was weird they grew only under my squash.
any idea what this is?
Did you put compost around your squash plants? I have volunteer tomatoes that sprout like that all over the place, either because the seeds did not break down in the compost bin, or a tomato fell from the mother plant and the seeds have now sprouted where the tomato landed last summer.
If I could see the leaves, I might be able to help.
Looks like crabgrass to me. Hard to tell in the picture. They will grow anywhere that has moderate moisture, sunlight and recently tilled. They also take over gardens pretty fast. Pull them now while they are small.
It is not crab grass. It does have a top like young tomato plants but is hard to tell. If it is under your squash just pull it and forget it. If you are really curious let one grow until it matures a bit more.
I might transplant the next one I see into a pot just because I am curious. I probably don't want whatever it is in my garden! Thanks for trying to help!
