I have two perennial hibiscus plants which I love. The problem is they both grow to be so tall that they end up breaking and leggy by the time they start blooming. I have tried tying them up and pinching them back, but I don't think I pinched enough because they still grew to be gigantic and leggy. Is there a method to this that I should use? Should I cut them way back as they grow????? Help.

The trouble is these are fairly late bloomers anyway, so if you do too much cutting back then they may not get around to blooming before the weather turns cold and they die back for the year. So if pinching isn't working, then staking them is probably the best solution. Some other things to consider...too much nitrogen can cause lots of green growth, so if you're fertilizing them regularly then I'd back off a bit on how much you're giving them and see if that helps. Also if they're not getting enough sun that will tend to make them leggier, so consider transplanting to an area that gets full sun (if they're not getting it where they are).
