making a path through wetlands

Waconia, MN

I have mowed a 4 foot wide path (through wetlands) from my grassy backyard to some trees at the back of the wetlands. My goal is to get rid of all the wetland grasses that I mowed over, cover with landscape fabric, then cover with woodchips to have a weed-free path through the wetlands.

What is the best way to do this. I know I could till it, then lay the fabric, then lay the woodchips, but I'm afraid the hardy grasses may grow through. Do I need to Roundup the path before laying the fabric. Is tilling necessary?

Thanks for your advice!

As long as you are sure there are no restrictions against disturbing the wetland , you need to use round-up. Apply carefully to growing grass and weeds, and then do a second application a few days later. Before you put down your fabric, you may want to dust the area with Amaze, a pre-emergent that will stop any seeds from sprouting. That should pretty well eliminate anything growing there. It is better if you do not till as that will leave you with a soft, loose soil base in your path, rather than the compacted soil that will give you a firmer base.

I hope this helps.

Yes, this was helpful - thanks!
One more thing, after applying the round-up, waiting 3 days and applying a 2nd dose of round-up and the other product, do I neet to wait any amount of time to put down the weed fabric?

No. The initial application requires sunlight to work.If possible, with grasses, it is a good thing to cut them back a bit with the mower.Round-up seems to work best on plants that are actively growing as it must get into the roots. The second application is to ensure good coverage of stubborn weeds. Spray everything a second time and your weedblock fabric can go down the next day.

Hope this works for you. You are welcome

Part of the success with your path will have to do with it being used enough to compact the chips. I created a path here with wood chips also and they work pretty well if they are walked on or driven over enough to really compact them. I would also add that I spray the path every two years and it seems to work well. Good luck. Hay
