fernspray false cypress

Denver, PA

I planted one in southeastern pa. Last year. 2009. It looks spindly and has a lot of brown on it. How can I get it to perk up and grow healthily? It gets a lot of sun, some shade in late day. It is near my patio, so partially protected. I have not fed it. It has more brown than it did last year.

How often do you water it? It needs to be fertilized in the spring and while it needs regular water, it does not like to be in wet soil for extended periods. Is it possibly freeze damage? Do you prune it?

The Fernspray Falsecypress is a spindly cultivar to begin with. Even nice ones have fairly slender branches. Then, in the time period between late fall and spring, most conifers shed their interior foliage making them look downright naked until they start to push new growth. Since you are in a cooler zone, this ugly period could last a little longer than it does where I live. Could you post a picture to help verify what type of browning you might have (normal shedding, winter burn, lack of water, etc.)?

The local garden center told me to move it to a sunnier location, which I did. the brown is on the interior parts of branches, but it is quite a bit. They said to give it more time. thanks
