Help! I can not kill the Japanese climbing fern

Tarpon Springs, FL

My back yard soil is full with some climbing fern roots. I guess Japanese or old world climbing fern. I'm tried to dig it out the long roots, tried to kill with chemical, but this roots everywhere in the yard, 4-5 inches below the surface. Some of them 40-50 feet long or more, and is under the grass, under my other plants. How can I kill it without to kill my other plants?

You could try applying a herbicide like Round-up with a small paint brush....I know, very time consuming and only works when the plant is in active growth, but sometimes that is the only way to get rid of an invasive plant. We had Chameleon plant and asian jasmine everywhere when we first moved here. It took almost two years of digging up and treating with Round-up and a paint brush, but we finally got it all.

Thanks themoonhowl. I think, I don't have other choice.

Good luck. Sounds like a long task ahead of you.

At first I thought we were talking about Kudzu. Then I Googled it - NOT Kudzu! Thanks to evolution it pretty much stops it's northward march in North Carolina. Of course as the planet continues to warm it's range will shift northward. It seems to be a real problem down on the Gulf, although sadly not the most pressing one.
And just like recent events down there, there seems to be no real solution to this one either.
I'm gonna say encourage Grubs to invade your soil and then introduce a family of moles. That coupled with a team of goats above ground might solve the problem in about 50 years. :-)

And I'm not totally joking either - perhaps a strategically tethered goat or two could keep the greenery cut back enough to simply starve out the roots.

And I'm definitely not joking about the BP Circus going on in the Gulf. Such a shame.
