I planted a moonlight reblooming big leaf hydrangea last spring and it did well all season. I pruned just the tips to the first bud early spring, and now I have new growth only at the very bottom of the plant. There are a few tight buds on the branches that don't seem to be doing anything. I am concerned that I didn't give it enough winter protection (5b) and/or that it may not be getting enough sun (about 2-3 hours early am and pm sun). Can anyone give me any tips or help diagnose the problem? Thanks in advance.
my moonlight reblooming hydrangea is blooming at the bottom!
If it's got buds now then those are the "old wood" blooms, so it means that your amt of sun is fine, and at least the part of the plant where the buds are was protected enough over the winter. I wouldn't worry about them not doing anything now--hydrangea buds seem to sit around forever before they get around to blooming. I'm in a much warmer zone than you are and my buds are still sitting there moving along very slowly. The lack of buds on the top could be due to lack of protection which damaged buds on the top part of the plant, or else it's possible that the trimming you did took off the part where the flowers would have formed. The new growth that you're seeing now should hopefully give you another round of blooms later in the year.
Thank you! I am very relieved to hear that!
In my zone, they started the broccoli phase about 1-2 weeks ago so be patient.
