Weeds & Grass - What do you use?

Marietta, MS(Zone 7b)

I see weeds & grass starting to grow in my newly planted veggie garden :( In the past, I have tried weeding by hand, but the weeds always win. I've also tried using pine needles for mulch with some success.

Today I ran across this (Black & Decker 18V Cordless 12" Trimmer/Edger NST2018). Has anyone ever used one of these? If so, I would love to hear of your experience with it. I would also like to know what everyone else does to combat weeds & grass in their veggie gardens. What has worked for you? What hasn't worked? Thank you :)

I cover my beds in the fall with leaves (as long as the leaves seem to be disease-free.) The beds that are completely covered have significantly fewer weeds (practically none) than the beds that aren't covered. A lot of weed seeds germinate in spring and I guess the layer of leaves doesn't provide a good medium for them to grow.
Of course I do have to hand-weed but over a period of years it has become much easier to control. I have been able to use my time weeding as a stress-reliever so it makes the job a little less unbearable. By early to mid-summer I usually don't have to weed at all (except the stray, random weed every once in a while) and I don't use any type of mulch in my veg garden .
There are many weed-control ideas. One I liked but haven't tried is using boiling water. It's non-chemical and supposedly really effective, but not practical for large areas. I've used bleach before which worked really well, but I wouldn't want to use it next to my plants; I used it along a chain-link fence.
Sorry, I don't have any type of weed-eater or trimmers and don't know anything about it.

If you don't want the problem to continue, you'll want to get the weeds out by the root, not just trim the top off of them. The root system will continue to grow even bigger and still be competing with your veg.

I too pull them by hand, and don't mind doing it (though I don't have a very big area, so it isn't very time consuming) .
