Rose, love the details in your photos, very sweet little birds. Thanks for sharing.

I'm expecting ours any day now.

Glen Burnie, MD

FINALLY! My 1st hummer, about an hour ago. I froze in place, watching her at the feeder - then my
cat scared her off! Grrrr.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Thanks Burn...I will be happy for you when yours show up!

Carol...congrats, I'm sure she will be back.

I got timed out and will try and post a few more pics. It always amazes me how the colors on the male throat change with the lighting...this one looks black to me.

Woo Hoo! A bird at my feeder. You've heard of the black chinned hummingbird? I think this is the black-capped hummingbird.

The Snowball plant outside the dining room window is a favorite place for the Hummers to perch. That plant shelters many birds year around and we get a birds eye view of then!

Congrats Mrs. Ed on the "new" Hummer!!

Bird Files, bird files Marna!!! :))

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

ROFLing with y'all on Marna's new 'hummer'.

Marlton, NJ

Beautiful shots as always Rose! Love that last shot. Thanks for starting the new thread!

LOL Mrs Ed!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Ha. Thanks all. I had my bird cam on it yesterday. 30 shots and this was the only one with a bird in it. Gave me a chuckle.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Greta pics Rose!

LOL...at Mrs. Ed!!

I am still waiting to get a pic. I was very busy yesterday but I did one now & then zipping around.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Rose,
Your pictures are phenomenal!! Just incredible clarity & detail.
Do you mind my asking what type of camera/set-up you're using?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Luvly dell. Tee hee Mrs Ed. I had the 'black-feathered hummer' stop to check out the feeder. Methinks the crow is after the giant bow, dirty rotten scoundrel

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

You are too funny, dahlianut!

Congrats to those who have been buzzed!

What awe-inspiring photos, they keep me coming back for more. Oh my, I need a snowball bush.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I have seen a male several times today at the feeders and checking out the potted plants.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

I saw a male checking out the Lantana and red Petunias...still haven't gotten any flower shots.

Nutsaboutnature...I use a Canon 40D with a 100mm-400mm zoom lens. Here is a link showing the different gear we all use http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1080645/ .

Rose, your pictures are wonderful!! I'm glad to hear more and more of us are seeing their hummers.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Rose,
Thanks so much for the info on your camera / lens & especially for the DG link on what members are using. Just great!

I still have a pretty basic digital camera. Believe it or not I still have my old (very old), heavy (very, very heavy) Nikon F2 film camera. My husband, who years ago was a freelance pro, still has some (but not much) of his equipment, but also for film. Needless to say, neither one of us uses any of it any more.

My small digital camera is good enough for snapshots (& the occasional great picture of deer in our yard), but the 3x optical zoom is never going do much for tiny birds.

Guess I'm going to have to make a step up one of these days.

Marlton, NJ

I was just out on the porch trying to get a shot of the Chickadees and look what came.. a female Ruby-throated Hummingbird! She was just 5 feet from me, I had to adjust the lens in order to get this shot because she was too close. As soon as she heard the noise from the camera she left the feeder and went over to the Honeysuckle vine just another five feet away but I couldn't get a shot of her there because she stayed on the opposite side.
I had my first male Hummingbird on April 28th but it was so nice to see this female so early. :-)

Neat, pell, she's lovely!

Marlton, NJ

Thanks FOV!!

WooHoo, Here is a male now too!

Maybe some nest nearby soon!

They keep zipping past me when they leave the feeders and head straight for the White Pines, same way they did last year. Seeing a hummer nest in person is on my bucket list...lol

Happy Mother's Day, Everyone!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Happy Mother's Day to everyone from me too. I didn't have a pix of a hummingbird, but the roses will serve the purpose. This is 'New Dawn'.

Thats beautiful Lily! Thank you!

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Congratulations Pelle! Your photos are beautiful!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Congrats Pelle...glad they are showing up for you! Beautiful pics!

Had to use a flash to get this shot...not a very good one! Towards the end of the day all the feeders are full of the Hummers storing up for the night.

Rose, hold the thought! I meant the Hummers, I'll hop on a train coming your way! Wow, I'm mesmerized! Congrats.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

GASP Rose. Well they never cease to amaze me at your house.

congrats Pell, Fingers crossed for babies.

Marlton, NJ

Rose, That is a darling shot of some of your Hummer gang!!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Have just seen the one male here so far.

Okay Rose... you're just going to have to share some of those!! I swear... WHAT do you put in the water there??? LOL

Macon County, IL(Zone 5b)

Rose, I am drooling on my keyboard! So many little beauties in one spot, my heart lurches! I am ready with blooming honeysuckle, weigela, foxglove, and a fuschia basket and no hummers yet. I did get a sign this Saturday though. A male Oriole on my feeder. Last year the Orioles were first, so I am hopeful it will be soon..! I attached a really bad picture (sorry) of my Oriole on the feeder, he was very skittish.

Thumbnail by ilflowers
Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Rose, it looks like you've got the perfect feeding spot for your hummers! They look wonderful!!

ilflowers, if you're able to remove one of those flowers from your feeder, the oriole will soon learn to go to just that one larger hole. He sure is a pretty one!

Marlton, NJ

If that is the feeder I think it is the flowers are built in and can't be removed. Maybe you can do so on a different feeder?

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Thanks everyone....I'm glad you liked that group shot!!

ilflowers...that is the same feeder that the Orioles use at my house. For some reason they prefer the smaller ones but will drink from the larger ones. The hole on that feeder seem to be more oval as opposed to round on the ones they don't use.

I have more pics to share but am taking advantage of the good ole outdoors right now.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

OMG Rose you have a hoard of hummers :O Incredible pic! Thanks.

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Rose, what are you using to soup up in their food? I can't imagine seeing that many at once even in the height of Summer. Wow!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Great pics everyone! We only had a single male during the spring migration last year and only 3 that passed through the year before so we're not getting excited to see any til August when we'll be getting oodles and oodles!!!!!
However, I can share a pic from last year I absolutely love!!!!! :D

A chase by the honeysuckle...not an easy pic to take...LOL
