2010 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds Vol. 2

Sandusky, OH

Quote from dellrose :
Congrats Burd...nice shots of your handsome guy!

I sure hope all the Honeysuckle that I've planted does well in the future years...I love the looks of it!

Pelle...I'm sure your little one will be back!

Nanny..I always leave mine out in the rain also...of course the ones on the porch are under cover. This is what it looked like last night as it was getting dark. Had to use a flash but hopefully you can see how they swarm in the early morning and late evening.

There they all are :O ....lol

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Our weather has filpped too...has been chilly and raining since thursday...YUCK! I still just keep seeing the 1 male. Funny that 3 years ago I had more hummmer with no plants and only 1 feeder than I do now with plants in and 3 feeders up!

Our Indigos are here and singing away to get mated up. Orioles here but still have seen no females and did see my FOY female Rose-breasted Grosbeak at the feeder yesterday in the rain.

Rose you know that just ain't right! lol

A season without Mrs. Ed fussing about no hummers wouldn't be right either...but we all keep hoping she will get a keeper.

Anyway, another chilly rainy day here in west central Indiana...

Marlton, NJ

Same weather here nanny. Hummers are coming daily but at very odd times like 8 pm.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

It seems like we have had nothing but rain forever and the temps have been so chilly for this time of the year. It's pathetic...I still have my farmers tan!! Had to leave early this morning for Springfield and wouldn't you know the sun is shining and it is gorgeous. Tonight and tomorrow more rain...grrrrr!! At least I got the lawn mowed but it looks like it should baled!

Ilflowers...that is a fat little female...LOL!

The Hummers are eating like crazy...like maybe a storm is brewing...again.....

Hope you all see some flying jewels soon!!

Sandusky, OH

have a female now...can't wait until the sun come's back out :)

Congrats Burd, I've seen them up on the tree top. They don't stay stationary for long.

Macon County, IL(Zone 5b)

I saw two males having words in a tree last night and of course I did not have my camera. That makes at least two males and two females so far. Yeah!

I did not see little fatty (I mean cutey) again, but I am keeping my eye out for her.

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Congratulations Burd!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I am going to the feeder on the the front porch off of the post so that way I can leave it up all the time and see it that helps here.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Obviously, not a very good picture (through a window with my 3x optical zoom), but he was such a cutie I couldn't resist. We now have several males coming at a steady clip, but still mostly late afternoon into evening. No females yet.

The garden shed & part of my neighbor's fence are actually way in the back of my yard even though they look to be right behind the hummer.

Nuts, That is a very good window shot of that beautiful male!!

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

I'm with Pelle Nuts, that's a great picture!

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Congrats Burd on the female.

Thanks pelle & Burd for your compliments.

Nanny & pelle, maybe Spring has finally arrived. Nice & sunny here today. Male hummers have been coming to the feeders all morning. Pelle, our pretty weather may be headed your way. Nanny, hopefully you have the nice weather we're having today, too.

Edited to say: Oops! This should have read, "Congrats Burd on the female. Thanks pelle & duc for your compliments"

Our 1st hummer of 2010 arrived last night just after 7pm. We originally thought it was early this morning, but DH went back through and double checked our security camera videos last night as well and sure enough it arrived last night to stay at our Motel Hummer and left a bit after 10am this morning and went on it's way. We haven't seen it since, so we were just a stop over for it...oh well. We are grateful for the visit! :D
Someday we hope to have a female nest nearby...not holding our breath though...lol

Congratulations Susan!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I'm so happy to have found my hummingbird stopped by to check out my blue Salvia. I rushed inside to get the camera for the pic. op. Look at what I've got instead. A pair of white-faced wasps were intoxicatedly in love. lol.

My first hummer sighting was tonight at 7pm! Me and the little kiddies quickly came back inside and made some hummer food and put out the feeders. :) The little guy was sipping out of one of my columbine.

Waaaaaaaaaaa

I want one!!!

Congrats everyone!

Macon County, IL(Zone 5b)

I agree, Nuts got a great shot! Congrats on the first hummers Susan and momoftwo! I got this shot of a male tonight, but unfortunately the light was behind him, so his ruby throat is dark.

Nice pics!! I didn't see my guy today....but I got the front porch feeder moved so now I can leave it out all the time. Put fresh nectar in it too.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Thanks ladies!
Nice pics folks!!!!!
What do ya'll think about this pic...
It's fuzzy...will get a better one tomorrow, but does our female look like it's got a nest mark or am I hallucinating? LOL
We are surprised she is still here, and since our weather is going to have rain and T-storms tonight and all day tomorrow, I don't see her migrating further until Friday...that is if she hasn't built a nest yet! Time will tell...it would be so cool if she has a nest in the area...which means she could have 2 broods here since it's early...OMG! I must be dreaming!!!
Here's the pic...

CONGRATS burd, susan and momoftwo607 ^_^ Luvly pics all and Cousin Nut. I am changing my nectar twicely and fluffing my bow thricely every day and I have my camera duck taped to my hand hoping to get a pic of the annas. I'm hoping the females will take the same flight path as the male scout who came to my feeder and not be swayed by the luvliness of the bird sanctuary near me. Still hoping for rubys "here little hummers.... here little hummers..."

Dahlia, you're too funny. ROFL. SusanL hope she's has a nest nearby. She doe look 'preggy'! LOL.

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Seem most of us have the hummers now, except for poor Mrs-Ed and Dnut. iIflowes, I love your plan, and Uncle Green thumb's plan too.:)

My hummer arrived late this year, they got here yesterday. I have a male and a female.

AHEM dear Burn I had a male anna at my feeder on Monday! I have never seen a hummer here in the spring so I am very EXCITED about that! Rubys probably never though sigh. Do they nest in your area Burn? (Hoping)

Marlton, NJ

Congratulations Erin, and burn! Nice shots everyone!

LOL Dahlia, keep up the good work.

Algonquin, IL(Zone 5a)

Congrats Susan, momoftwo & burn!

Great pics Lily_love, ilflowers, Susan, my cousin dahlianut & burn.

Thanks ilflowers & "cuz" dahlia.

Don't cry Mrs_Ed. Keep on planting that beautiful hummer food. You're gonna be surprised one of these days & I bet it'll be before Autumn!

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Dnut, all that razzmatazz you've done for attracting them worked!!! Congratulation. I must of missed the part of the Anna visit , sorry about that. Hope the female enjoys the big Red bow welcome.
Mine must nest close by, but I've never seen a nest. They're in the yard all summer.`

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Maybe this will be the year for a nest in your garden ^_^

Nineveh, NY(Zone 5a)

Just saw another one on my scabiosa ! :) I was so happy to see him I forgot that I had my camera in my hand! lol! :P

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Congrats everyone on the arrival of your Hummers!! LOL..momoftwo607!!

I walked all over the yard and still have not found a Hummers nest. I am heading for the wooded Juniper area and see what I can see!

Lewisville, TX(Zone 7b)

well.. I've only had my hummer return once since I first spotted him.. it was raining & he just "sniffed" my feeder then took off!! hahahaha I am keeping up with changing the nectar though as I never know if he comes early or when I am not looking!!! hahaha

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

As the weather warm up here, the hummers seem not interested in my nectar, but after the flowers out there. Problem is, they just don't sit still for photo ops.

Lewisville, TX(Zone 7b)

I just had a thought ( uh-oh!) . I saw my neighbor spraying Round up the other day... & I wonder if that's kept the hummers away! hmmm... I wish I could send her a letter telling her that she could be harming them... but I am pretty sure she would take offense & I don't want bad neighbor relations!! (I don't think she cares what it will do to the butterflies!).

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

My little guy just came by...he banged into the window pretty good but seemed ok. He went to the feeder and got a drink. Dark and raining so no point to even try a photo!

Nineveh, NY(Zone 5a)

Saw another hummer on my ajuga. I interupted my husband while he was talking and was practically screaming "look, look a hummer". I think he things I am crazy. :)

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

omg. i think i'm going to have to unwatch this thread. LOL.

Hey, what if I put a bazillion pounds of sugar into my pond and then put 20' fountain spray on it?

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Congrats on everyone's new sightings! We have at least 4 seen at once but there may be more. No pics yet but will keep trying. Erin, they were all over the blue/purple columbine today and will watch the "Butterfly Blue" Scabiosa to see if the little ones are tempted by it.

nanny, thank you for sending some of your Towhees :)
