radishes

Foristell, MO(Zone 5b)

i know radishes are supposed to be one of he easiest to grow- however, i have a problem EVERY year, so Ill ask the experts here to help me figure this out. I planted them in three different plots this year, starting early march in my zone 5 garden. One in full all day sun, one in after 12:00 shade, varying degrees of shade in the other spots, like from taller plants. Some are with carrots and lettuce, one next to the spinach, some by themselves. The problem- beautiful leaves, no radish ever, then they bolt. The soil is loose- the carrots do fine! I've tried cherry belles, easter egg, hailstone- a few other varieties over the years but every year the same. I'm thinking perhaps the soil is too fertile or imbalanced- any advice? Thanks, Lisa

Lisaoliver, my readishes were doing the same thing. I finally read up that I was using too much nitrigen & not enough p;hospherus. So I started adding fertilizer with more phospherus & my readishes made this year.

I never use any kind of fertilizer on my radishs. I do know they like cooler temps. The first bunch I planted came up and made radishs quickly. The second planting the temps have jumped to 90 and they are just setting there.

I haven't added furtilizer, but maybe just too much manure. I pulled them all out and I'll try again in adifferent spot.

lisaoliver, Manure is loaded with nitrigen. That is what is making your green tops. You need to stop with all the fertilizer.
