help with catmint please

rio rancho, NM(Zone 7a)

I have a catmint that has reached it's maturity (it's about 4 years old) I think and it totally 'lost' it's middle this year. It's growing, but just not in the center. Will it fill itself in eventually? I know I can divide it, but I really don't want to. Are there any other remedies to help it fill itslef in? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Taranne

Welcome Taranne!

What I've done whenever something loses its shape like that is to reposition it. Dig it up, divide it away from the dead area and replant it in a tidy clump in the same spot. Some of these mint family plants tend to 'walk away' from where they are originally planted. Monarda is another one with this habit.

Okay...didn't realize I could just replant it in the same spot :) Thank you so much....I will definitely do that....I guess that leaves me with another question, though. Can I do that now, or am I supposed to wait until a certain time of year? it's flowering right now, so I'm assuming that I should wait a bit? or wait til the fall? Does it matter? catmint are extremely hardy if that makes any difference in the timing? Thanks again Taranne

I'd wait till it quits flowering and if you're in an area that is prone to really high temps, I'd wait till fall. (I know that parts of NM are cooler than others depending on the altitude) You're right, catmint is pretty forgiving.

The dead spot in the middle isn't disease or anything, it is just how these plants creep, so it doesn't hurt to put it right back.
