i bought 2 pixwell gooseberry .remembering eating them when i was little and later also remembering them vanishing.now i know why dad got rid of his but that was 20 years ago.after researching for a couple days now i think i will bring the bush's back,i cant take the chance of killng any pines in my neighborhood.if anyone thinks this is a good bush and will do no harm please let me know,i would love to be munching on some gooseberry's.
gooseberry bush's still a bad bush?
They are a host plant for white pine blister rust, so if there are pines in your area that are susceptible to that fungus then I'd think twice. The gooseberries typically aren't harmed that much by the fungus but it causes real problems for the pines. I'd talk to your county extension agent for advice--they are more familiar with your immediate area and could tell you whether you're likely to cause problems by planting gooseberries.
In Ca., the only way we can get Goosberries is frozen, even though there is a native species.
