My 75 year old Los Angeles bungalow just got a badly needed paint and roof job...and in the process, the roofers and painters destroyed any and all landscaping about the house. Please see the photo on my member page - the house faces west, I am in zone 10. I have since the photo was taken pulled up the old marigolds flanking the path and replaced them with salvias, and I found a couple planters for the stoop that match the color scheme of the house. The grass will be replaced. I have, in pots, a yellow honeysuckle and a 5 gallon cape mallow - would these work for the front? If so, where should they be placed?
My front yard needs your help!
Well, I don't know since I'm not from that area...but hey, that's a nice looking bungalow :)
Welcome to Dave's Garden, glad you found us'
That's my grandmothers' home, lol' Sure looks like it but many look alike' Please keep the honeysuckle far away from the house,it goes crazy and have seen it take up a roof, easily, lol' If it touches the ground for any amt. of time it also will root' As for where to place your containers, that's a personal choice' Keep us posted' See ya,Sis'
That is an absolutely charming house, and I especially like the yellow paint job. It sets off the architecture very nicely.
Zone 10 can be a bit tricky, even though many of us will be longing for your warmth in a few more months :)
Before you rush out and buy plants, think about what you want from your landscape - do you want a carefully tended "manicured" front yard? A cottage garden with a riot of colors? Do you prefer the look of shrubs and small trees, or the changes that perennials can lend? In your climate, you have a choice that many of us do not - to go "tropical" with some vines, trees, shrubs and plants that would keel over by early winter in our harsher climates.
(I personally like the look of very bright colors against a yellow backdrop - bouganvillea, cannas, etc with bold colors and leaf patterns, but that's just me :)
If that interests you, take a peek in the Tropicals section of the plants database for some things that should do well in your zone.
Or if you have a different idea of how you'd like to proceed, give us more details on your likes/dislikes and we'll give you some options. And welcome to DG!!!!
my first thought was blues!!!
i see the cottage garden effect with masses of flowers, wispy and whimsical.
i have no idea what you would plant to acheive that tho.
