Muscadine grapes in the pacific northwest

Stanwood, WA

Anyone ever tried to grow muscadine in western washington or oregon?
If so any luck? special considerations like variety of muscadine, soil prep, etc?
I really want to grow some, maybe going to need a greenhouse?
thanks for any help everyone.

Can't help you too much but you won't need a greenhouse--they're hardy in much colder climates than yours.

Some initial searching indicates that it probably wouldn't do well for you because muscadines need hot weather to produce decent fruit: http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/muscadinegrape.html Also, they aren't very cold hardy, with temps frequently going below 10F a significant detriment. For your area it's probably going to be the lack of heat that will be your major problem. I found another site which stated that they could be grown in USDA zones 6-10, which conflicts with the above info.

Those grapes produce very well in the deep south, but I don't think theres any hope for them in the Pacific Northwest. Not near enough heat...Hay

Here's a list of grapes that will grow in the PNW...many of them are wine grapes but they list some that are used as table grapes as well. http://cru.cahe.wsu.edu/CEPublications/eb0775/eb0775.html
