I planted Blueberries with "Miracle-Gro Organic Choice Garden Soil".
After that I found out Blueberry should have used acid dirt like pH of 4.0 to 5.3.
I checked pH number on dirt's bag that I used, It doesn't say anything about pH range.
Q1. How can I know my dirt's pH?
Q2. Can I fix my dirt to right pH and keep good pH range?
Thank you.
Blueberry's dirt
I just started with blueberries last year- so I'm not an expert, but i did try to do some reading up. Nurseries or Home Depot/Lowes stores sell soil testing kits. The pre-packaged potting or garden soils are usually on the slightly acid side of neutral I think. You will want to acidify the soil more for the blueberries. There are products called soil acidifiers (usually made of mostly sulphur) that you can mix in. The product will say how much to use for the volume of soil (assuming it is neutral), or if you are more particular, you could test the pH both before and after the product had time to settle in. Pine and peat products are also acidic, so they are also often recommended too. There is a fertilizer called "Holly Tone" that is for acid needing plants that is recommended, though I haven't used it yet.
Ga soil is usually acid, but a soil test is always a good idea. How many blueberries? Did you dig a big hole and add compost and peat?
Ms. or Mr. monkapotamus,
Wow, I'm living in a world of convenience.
I didn't know they are soil testing kits. I thought I have to take dirt to County office to test. I'm soooo bigginer and my mind is still 70's.
Thank you very much.
Ms. or Mr. funtomatoes,
I'm going to get soil testing kits and put some sulfur if I needed.
I got 2 blueberries in a about 11 inch in diameter pot so far --- 2 more blueberries are comming soon.
I dig about 12 inch in diameter hole. It might be too small,,,,
I didn't compost or peat.
I only filled Garden Soil and coverd with mulch.
I wonder Am I killing my blueberry?
You're still better off taking soil samples to the county office if you want a thorough analysis of your soil--pH, nutrients, etc. But if all you want to do is find out if your soil pH is in the right ballpark for the blueberries you can do that with the kits.
You are not killing your blueberry, but it will take longer to live up to it's potential.
Instead of a hole, dig or till up a large area, mix in a lot of compost and peat, and then plant. Tease apart the roots before you plant. You also need at least two varieties of blueberries for pollination (three is better) Mulch and water deeply. At a previous house I had 6 bushes, and after 10 years we could pick more than 20 gallons from them. I mulched with sawdust, a pick-up truck load each year. I didn't bother to age it, because it was going on top of the old stuff. I'm not an expert, but that is what worked for me.
Depending on the variety, leave plenty of room between them- they can get big.
Oh, and the hardest part is to pinch off the blossoms or berries the first year or two, so the plant is putting energy into a healthy root system, not fruit.
Ms. or Mr. ecrane3,
Thank you for your advice.
I agree. Now I'm curious about "nutrition facts" of my dirt for other plants I'm going to grow.
Ms. or Mr. funtomatoes,
I up picture of blueberry.
Should I just pinch off random about how much?
Can I do it now or later?
I think I need cut some branches that toward inside for improve airflow.
What a nice blueberry plant! Go ahead and pinch off now, you may not be able to when you see the blueberries starting to plump up. I don't know about pruning, I never pruned mine. You could probably call your county extension agent and ask a Master Gardener.
Anyone else know about pruning? I'd like to know also.
