good places to buy houseplants?

Pottstown, PA

im ready for spring and beginning to come out of my winter laziness and state of hibernation. i was curious if you guys had any favorite places that you get you plants from (indoor or out) for gardening, houseplants ect. i've been going to lowes and home depot but have gotten mealy bugs and gnats from these stores. any other ideas that have a good history of prices and plant care?

I would check out Craigslist. You might be able to find someone locally with a nursery or a private greenhouse. I found a dear friend and mentor whom I have bought lots of plants from. Some of them are fairly rare. You never know who/what you are going to find. Also, go places that promote people of a like mind to gather, such as garden centers and shows, and talk to people. You could also check out who offers the Master Gardener program near you and either sign up or they have people who are there just to give advice and answer questions. Hope this helps. Good luck hunting!

Since other nurseries are in charge of providing ALL the plants--iside and out--for HD and Lowes--the plants are, usually, very healthy. Anything not in good condition gets canned. I have worked for HD for 12 years--and since bell Nursery (you may have another one) took over--everything is great.
Besides---SAVE YOUR RECEIPT because HD guarantees all it's plants (not annuals...) for a year.
Just bring it back--dead or infested----but you MUST have your receipt!!!

I imagine Lowes does the same, as HD and .Lowes coppy each other to the nth degree.

Here in Baltimore we have a few MEGA Nurseries--like Watsons and Valley View Farms that are quite reputable.
See if you have any biggies in your neighborhood.

Check your locally owned smaller garden centers too.
