I have stupid dogs who eat juniper bushes!!

Springfield, OH

I have shaded beds off my back patio. First year I planted hostas, my dogs ate them. Last year I planted junipers, my dogs ate them. I was thinking roses, but they don't fare well in shade. I'm completely and totally stumped. I think my dogs will probably eat anything I plant if they're willing to eat juniper bushes!!! But if anyone knows of any shrubs, or any shady plant at all, that would give my dogs a run for their money PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!

Erika, you may have to resort to raised beds and/or obedience training. I do not know the breed you have, but most dogs I know love shady cool earth and are quite happy to wallow out a nice patch of it and haven't a care for what is in the way.

Raised beds with some space behind or between them for the dogs might be a consideration. You could add some flagstone pieces in front of the beds also.

You could also go to shade annuals in pretty containers sitting on a few pieces of flagstone with mosses tucked around. The flagstone in the shade transmits the cool of the earth and doesn't give them anything to dig up. If they have a place that is attractive to them, they will leave other stuff alone....unless they are just plant eating pups. Grin

You could possibly even just plant your hostas close together and lay down some flagstone in front of the beds. If the hosta beds are only large enough to accommodate the hostas and the dogs have a cool spot to lie, it might work.

Crimson Pygmy’ (Berberis thunbergii atropupurea) (small) or any of the barberrys. Some will remain red (like this one I think) in the shade.

There is another option, replace the stupid dogs with smarter dogs...LOL Hay

You might consider some fencing also. Some types , at major home improvment centers, are cheap
and work well. I always have to choose plants that are not poisonious for dogs because dogs are apt to
either eat them of dig around them.
